Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The State has added ground-in rumble strips to Highway 410 for much of the way from Enumclaw to Crystal Mountain (at least). They have really messed up a good bike route. These gouges, 8-10" long x 6" wide x 1" deep are dug into the pavement just outside the fog line every foot! Either you must ride outside of the rumble strip amidst the broken glass and rocks or inside the fog line in the car travel lane.
What genius thought this was a good idea?

guess they want cyclists to exercise their right to "take the lane".

I guess they call them that because an angry motorist is going to start a rumble with cyclists taking the lane on a highway? :)

It wouldn't be so bad if the shoulders got swept every so often so that the glass and rocks got cleared off, but there's always going to be rocks on the shoulders by the quarry.

They put these in, and also the ones down the middle of the road, where there has been a history of sleeping motorists running off road or into oncoming traffic. Highway 2 has them from Snohomish east a longgg ways.
They were added to the piece of the STP route on the east side of Fort Lewis, too. Makes it really interesting when the leading rider pulls off on a paceline.
It was probably a safety project where there had been a number of off the road accidents. Get used to seeing more and more of these rumble strip projects as they are becoming more popular for a tight budget safety fix. Centerline rumble strips are the biggest improvement right now. They've added them to US 12 through most of Lewis County and parts of SR 4 and SR 504.
