Looking for rechargeable 1.5v AA/AAA (prefer AA) sized cells for colder temps yet able to recharge after the cell has drained.
I am aware lithium one time use cells are out there but I'm looking for a rechargeable solution. I also know of the 3.7v li-ions but such single cell voltages in series would fry the devices I have that probably max out at 3.5v (2 x AA).

Like, super-cold temps? NiMH AAs work ok down to any temperature I can stand to ride in (I wimp out below 10°F, feet can't stay warm).
(no, I don't know of any such batteries :()

Li-ion is totally different than NiMH/NiCad in a lot of ways. For one, the cell voltage is at least 2x NiMH/NiCad/Alkaline/etc. It's not like there's two cells there in the pack to get it to 3.7v, it's still a single cell.....
If you abuse 'em, they'll blow up in a fairly unpleasant fashion. Prolly better to just start over and either homebrew, totally convert, or buy Li-specific gear.

According to this table (http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-3.htm) lithium-ion batteries have about the same operating temperature range as NiMH batteries. NiCd provides greater low-temperature usability, but of course at roughly half the energy density as NiMH.

14500 li-ion batteries are roughly the same size as AA. 10440 are about the size of AAA. As others have pointed out the voltages are quite a bit higher. The available current is also lower than high-end nimh. You wind up getting about the same amount of watts from either (2600ma * 1.2v = 3.120 watts vs 900ma * 3.7v = 3.330 watts). And you pay a lot more for them.
If your ni-mh batteries get cold, stick them in your pocket. Seems cheaper.
