When I search for all posts by a user in a particular forum, the results show all threads started by a user in that forum.

When I search for all threads started by a user in a particular forum, the search tells me it's confused and cannot complete the request.

This bug was reported on 1-16-2008: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=379611
And on 2-6-2008: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=385805

EDIT: Updated with videos. Replicating the problem on IE7 (http://www.nasbo.org/bf.avi), and on Firefox 3.0.1 (http://www.nasbo.org/bf2.avi)

I'll pass it along to tech.

Allright, bd, I can't duplicate the problem, and neither can the webmaster. I'm definitely not saying it didn't happen, or isn't happening for you.

I'll need more info, like your browser, etc. I used Firefox, both 2.X and 3.X, Safari, IE 5,6, and 7. I also used Opera. The only ones I haven't tried are an ancient version of Netscape or Lynx.

I'm using Firefox 3.0.1

Let me paste a PM i just sent to MrCrassic, that may help replicate the problem:

Good morning, bdcheung!

So I ran a quick search using "Search this Forum," then doing an Advanced Search, searching for all posts by my username. This turned up 1,194 results.

I then did a search using the link on the top of the page (parsing through all forums), and I received 2,560 results.

Can you tell me all of the steps that you've taken that's showing this problem?

Thanks,

Carlos

Sure. Step by step, this is what I do:

1) Click "Search The Forums"
2) Enter the following search criteria:
a. Keywords: (BLANK)
b. User Name: MrCrassic / Find Posts by User
c. Find items posted within the past: ___ *Forever
d. Sort results by: Post Date
e. Show Results as: Posts
f. Search in forums: Road Cycling
g. Also search in child forums: TRUE
3) Click "Search Now"
4) Look at results:
Showing results 1 to 25 of 88
Search took 5.964 seconds

Any other questions? The search is broken. B-r-o-k-e-n. Have you even tried doing a search with the parameters I've mentioned??

I just tried the search mentioned above in IE7 and it's still only turning up threads started by MrCrassic, which number 88.

However, when in a thread and I click on a username and select "Find more posts by (USERNAME)" it shows all posts made by that user, albeit across all the forums and not confined to the active forum.

I just made a screen-capture video that replicates the problem in IE7. Please view it here:

Works here. If I search the way you described in your step-by-step list, I get 1100+ hits. If I change it to "threads started by" in 2b, I get 88 hits.

this is on MSIE 6.0.2900etc with SP2 installed

Sorry, I am not having any problems. It seems that I have 76 posts in RC, not the singleton which you stated I had.

My post, with the numbers, was meant to draw attention to the fact that search (for me, at least) is totally farked. I had reported this twice previously and it just seemed to fall by the wayside, so I'm having to get creative now in hopes that some tech guy will finally help solve the issue.

I thought the videos were a nice touch.

I tested this in both Firefox 3.0.1 and Google Chrome 0.2.149.30 and got 1191 results in each.

That's great.

Doesn't help much, though. Look at the videos. I'm not hallucinating the problem.

I just downloaded Google Chrome and tried it. Same issue. Would it help if I post a video of that, too?

I did not suggest that you are. I was just providing a data point that might help to troubleshoot the problem.

I didn't mean to get so defensive and snarky. I am very frustrated that search is not working properly for me, and the fact that I seem to be the only one experiencing the malfunction magnifies those feelings.

We just installed new computers at work (seriously...quite the coincidence) and the problem is still here. brand new hardware.

bd, I just looked at your data in the Admin CP, permissions and settings and all are normal. The video IS a nice touch, by the way. I still can't replicate the issue, and this time, I even tested with the 15 year old Netscape browser, and everything still worked, got a huge number of hits.

I still can't replicate the problem, and I don't know what else to look at.

But can you confirm that I'm not crazy? The video confirms that, at least, right?

Tom Stormcrowe
09-25-08, 07:51 PM
No, you aren't crazy. Well, at least you aren't crazy that way. You are a nut though. ;) :p

We just can't replicate the problem, and no one else has been able to on the tech end, either. If we can't replicate it, we can't fix it, because there's no starting point to look at.

Did your search BD, using MrCrassic in the road cycling forums and subforums:

Showing results 1 to 25 of 1245
Search took 8.813 seconds

Guys, are you sure there is no way to do any editing to profile or backend information with his username?

It's something with his account. The problem clearly is not local.
