Foo - kubaton versus bike shoe

Flying out of Denver TSA was having an issue with something in my bag, and left me in the "holding pen" while they kept pulling things out and running it back through. I rarely get irritated about these things, and tried to be helpful by offering suggestions to the agent about things it could be-

GPS? No.
Bike shoes? No.
Huge laptop charger? no.

Agent: "It's a baton or something"
-- pondered.
Me: "Front flap, its a kubaton keychain"

Oops. now, it IS on the TSA prohibited item list, so thats my bad, no arguement that I should have been on top of things (I got out of MSP with it- in fact, have traveled with it several times).

Thinking about it, these were acceptable. Couldn't they do just as much (more?) damage.

I wouldn't trust a Shimano shoe in a fight, but if you're talking like, Diadora or Sidi, then I'd pick the shoe. Seems like it has greater eye gouging potential.

Speaking as someone who used to be a kubaton instructor and has carried one for two decades, many Federal buildings, courthouses and now the airports will not allow them to pass the security screen. In these environments, I recommend a miniMag flashlight, or other small 2 AAA or 2 AA light; a Cold Steel Sharkie, or a larger diameter pen or marker. These never get a second glance at the security station and make a fine kubaton for someone who knows what they are doing.

Kubotans and my guess soon alloy flashlights, 'specially the ones with the serrated bezels; are a victim of there own marketing. The second picture below features the "interrogator bezel" :) clearly it shouldn't be available to the public, only professionals.

Contrary to popular belief or maybe not, the government doesn't really want to do all the extra work and knows that these things aren't that big a deal. But once something is accepted as dangerous by the public, the onus is on them to look like they are doing their part. Long before such things are banned outright, they are listed on .gov newsletters as a heads up.

You could trash someone up good with a pair of Sidi mountain shoes (don't mention they're called "Bullets"!), whether or not you're wearing them, but I've never seen a kubaton demonstrated. So I'd have to go with the shoes, with an open mind toward the little +1 Stick Of Maiming.

yeah, its a martial arts and also self-defense weapon. I'm sure many things could be deadly, if trained to use them right :thumb:

When I was in college in Atlanta I delivered pizza at night, in some not-so-nice neighborhoods. We were not allowed to carry weapons, so my 4 D-Cell Maglight had to suffice. I almost had to use it once when a bunch of punk kids wanted free pizza. When I pulled the flashlight out of the bag, they had second thoughts and smartly ran off.

There was a truly lousy movie where Clive Owens killed someone with a carrot, and they were allowed through security last time I heard. Nice sharp stainless steel pens are ok, but disposable razors are not, which makes perfect sense to me.

I still can't figure out that kubaton though. How long is it? How do you use it?

For most people, who don't have to worry about taking suspects into custody, I recommend the striking techniques to distract the assailant and give you time to escape. Compliance holds only come into play if you have to restrain someone in order to arrest or secure them.

palm to the nose. no kubaton needed. Fight is over in about 1/2 second. Next stop for assailant is the morgue.

I was once "volunteered" in a citizen's academy class (I was only young person there)
for kubaton compliance holds demo as well as cuffs. Ouch !! :(

Next demo was pepper spray, but fooled us/me by using water-like spray...whew !!
