Long story------------
Last tuesday, I had the day off like every other tuesday....and like every other tuesday, I woke up early and went for a ride. I park by the boat docks at white rock lake, circle the lake, head up through lakewood, down knox/henderson, down the katy trail into downtown dallas for a few miles, back up the katy trail, down through lakewood and circle the lake again. All said and done, its about a 35 mile loop I ride. So anyway, I rode this about 9am and felt good. Went back home to my wife (who also had the day off) and 10month old daughter. We went and piddled around and ate lunch at barbec's, then back home. Around 6pm I got the itch again and decided to go to the lake for another spin. I finished the first lap around the lake with no problems at all and decided to ride once more, putting my total miles for that day around 55. I should have packed it up and gone home after the first lap!

The good part:
The 2nd lap sucked-there was so many gnats or whatever they are that I had to ride with my head down and my shirt over my mouth. It felt and sounded like hail when they hit my helmet. Anyway, it was getting dark, so I picked up the pace. I climbed the footbridge that runs parallel with mockingbird and was coasting down the other side when I slowed down to make the right turn I'd made hundreds of times before. I realized that my front wheel was a little off course and was probably going to make contact with the grass for a split second, but it probably wouldn't be that big of a deal. I would just hold on and guide my bike back to the pavement and it'd be ok. I was wrong. As soon as my front wheel left the pavement, I flipped over my handlebars and landed head and right shoulder first into the pavement. I rolled once, and landed back onto my ass. I looked to my left, and my bike came crashing down beside me, hit and bounced up, then rolled 2 more times and stopped. I immediately jumped up, and reached for my helmet to see if I had cracked it. Only my left arm went up though. I knew something was wrong. I felt my right shoulder with my left hand, and there was nothing there. Just a big caved in spot where my shoulder should be, with a giant knot poking up from the center. I panicked. I tried to find my phone, then remembered it was in my waist pack I'd started to carry a few weeks ago. When I got it out and dialed my wife, I saw officer ray ride by on his bike. I yelled out that I fell and was hurt really bad. He called an ambulance, and he also stayed with my bike for about 30 minutes til my wife could get there and secure my bike to my jeep. I was taken by ambulance to doctors hospital on a backboard and a neckbrace, just in case I had a spine injury. I had a dozen x rays taken on my shoulder, a ct scan on my head and neck and various other tests. The ER doctor told me I had the worst shoulder injury he'd ever seen. Ever. The knot sticking up where my shoulder had once been was my collar bone poking up against my skin. I went to an orthopedic surgeon on thursday, and he informed me I had a grade 5 shoulder dislocation and the ligament holding my collar bone to my shoulder had completely torn. A grade 5 dislocation is very rare, and is usually seen on people that have been in a severe car accident. I had surgery on my shoulder last friday, and everything went ok. I've been heavily medicated since last tuesday and pretty out of it. My bike seems to be ok from what I can tell. Thanks to officer ray, who stopped and helped!!! He was the only person that did. I bet I was passed by at least 15 other people that never even asked if I was ok or needed help. One group of riders rode by, looked in my direction, and the lead guy yelled "ouch!!" and they all kept on riding. I'll have zero shoulder mobility in my right shoulder for at least 4 weeks, and it'll be around 6 months for a full recovery.
Sorry for the long story!!!! Thanks to everyone that helped!!

Yes. I have my follow up with my orthopedic tomorrow, and we'll see what happens after that. He still has to make sure I have no muscle damage, which will require another surgery if I do.

Sorry to hear about your crash. That is really horrible. I am happy to hear that help was close by and that you are apparently getting good care. Will keep you in my thoughts. Best of luck.

And I think I forgot to say that my helmet did crack, and might have very well saved my life.

Ok. Lesson to everyone: small pavement gaps / cracks / seams / edges can KILL you. Literally.

A well-known Dallas area rider, Gary Glickman, died after getting his wheel caught in one. Don't be next. When I teach newbies (and my kids) I really drill them on protecting the front wheel and the contact patch.

Crap, man! That sounds horrible.

I've had to heal from numerous breaks and sprains. One thing to keep in mind:
Listen to your orthopedist. A couple of times, I got back on the soccer field before I had been released. One time, it was fine but the second time, I set my recovery back by several weeks.

Gee whiz. Thank God (or whoever) you weren't killed. I hope you have a speedy and pain-free recovery. It sounds a hundred times worse than the two separated shoulders I've had from sports injuries - and those were extremely painful.

When I'm out riding and I see someone down or just on the side of the rode, I always look at them and try to assess what the situation might be, and ask if they need anything. I know there are plenty of people out there that will help out another rider. It's really unfortunate that the riders that saw you didn't react diffrently. What's up with that? Why do so many people not want to help? Does it interrupt their ride? Do they not have time? Maybe you didn't look hurt? Who knows!

Get well soon!

Good news! I just got done with my follow up visit with the orthopedic surgeon, and he said I'm healing up really well, even though its only been a week. I got more x-rays, and everything seemed to be lined up perfectly. He said at the rate I'm going I shouldn't have any future problems once I'm healed up. He expects a full recovery in about 3 months or so. The first 4-6 weeks are the most crucial though. I still won't have any mobility in my right arm for that time. I'm also realeased to go back to work on monday. I should be ready in time for the super bowl sunday ride!!!!

Dang, that sucks bad. I am truly sorry to hear this. I had a wipe out, but it only resulted in me getting all scraped up.

oh man that sucks. . .
not just the injury but being passed by a group who can only say 'ouch', asshats.
Agree with all the above, especially the listen to your ortho.
hope to see you at one of the meet n' greet's soon, hoisting a beer with that bad arm
(i.e. healed).

Dang THB.

Glad your docs feel good about the progress. I had shoulder surgery but it wasn't anything like this. I hated mine, so allow me to be amazed and in awe of your positive outlook.

Sounds like you were on your Madison? Hopefully she survived relatively unscathed.

Heal Up Soon.

BTW, I'm the guy with the Blood Hound puppy (big set of ears with legs) that was at RBM for the White Rock ride.

txvintage, i was on the madison. as far as i can tell, it looks ok.
the only noticeable damage looks to be to my brooks b17 special, that was only 2 days old at the time of the crash.
oh well.

While you are waiting for your shoulder to heal you can always go to the spot where the guy yelled "ouch" and wait for him to ride by and put a stick in his spokes

I sort of "know the feeling". I crashed in that very same spot about 2 years ago on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Even though I had taken that corner hundreds of times, I overcooked it and the front slid out from under me as I wheeled around corner. The front tire ended up under the bottom of the fence there and I bounced and rolled a few times on the sidewalk. Damage to the bike was minimal. I wasn't too bad off, but was bleeding pretty good from a cut on the bridge of my nose made by my sunglasses when my helmet pushed down. I knew I was bleeding, but thought it was just a nose bleed. It felt like I had been punched in the nose.

At least 30 people rode or walked by without saying a word or even acknowledging that I was there.

Finally a lady stopped and checked on me. I was a pretty gruesome sight by then with all the blood on my shirt but she at least was able to tell me that the blood was coming from a cut on my nose and not somewhere else. A little direct pressure and I was able to stop the bleeding.

A trip to the ER with subsequent X-Rays and stitches and I was fine. Scrapes and bruises but nothing more serious.

I too always will at least ask someone that is on the side of the road if they are OK. I will always stop and help if they need it. Not sure why others wouldn't - especially when you are obviously injured.

Glad to here you have a good prognosis though. Things like this can certainly be much worse.

I saw a woman a few years ago take a header at WRL at the bottom of the spillway. She died on the spot. She went off the pavement and tried to over correct. Wham. Right on her head. She was wearing a helmet, two Baylor ER doctors were there within 20 seconds of it happening. They could not do anything.

You can see the exact spot where she fell (inside the chain link fence. At the time the fence was not there.) It's marked by some dead flowers stuck in the grass.

From what I understand it was a mixed blessing that she died. She had been losing alot weight and feeling strange, which she chalked up to riding in the heat of the summer. She was supposed to visit a doctor the next week to see what the deal was with the strange symptoms and weight loss. Her autopsy revealed that she had full blown stage 4 cancer. Did not even know it. She only had a very short time left to live, maybe weeks. Some say that's how they'd want to go, taking a header riding a bike.

hope you heal up quick man. i've got a similar shoulder injury from my BMX days (like 11 years ago) that still gets aggravated. i was doing cross dismount/mounts the other day and after 15 minutes i couldn't lift my bike, it hurt so bad. this is not cool.

follow doctors orders! i didn't and skipped surgery. now i can pull my shoulder out of socket and flop my arm around which is cool when we're all drunk, but sucks in reality.
