i recently purchased a MonkeyLectric m132s (http://www.monkeylectric.com/index.htm), and thought i'd share my observations with the BF folks.

first off, i love it.

pros:

insanely bright, super-funky patterns. 32 multicolour LEDs (16 per side) that can independently display one of 16 colours.

it's been impervious to the elements so far, and weighs almost nothing.

it's definitely not something to use for a primary light source, but for calling attention to there being someone/something/a bike there, it works very well.

there's no work to installing it. you don't have to program it. three zip ties, and it's mounted.

cons:

it ain't cheap. 65 bucks.

it doesn't "fill the wheel" with colour at any speed i normally ride (on the bike i have it installed on). admittedly, it's my ss commuter with a 36/16 high gear - so i'm not going to go very fast.

it's only mounted with zip ties, so it'd be relatively easy for someone to steal (if they had any clue what it was).

modifying it to be programmable (spell out words, whatever) voids the warranty.

all in all, i have to say it's a good product. not cheap, but the multi-colour ultra-bright LEDs in this thing aren't cheap.

The website says you have to go about 20mph for it appear to fill the wheel. Hopefully they'll release a v2.0 where multiple units can synch up so you don't have to go as fast to get the full effect. It sounds like it still looks pretty cool even at slower speeds though? I've got one on the way, can't wait to try it out.

Just bought two. Used code 'bikecult' off of 'bikes and bits' and got 25% discount.

it looks cool at just about any speed - even stopped. 2 or more per wheel is definitely the way to go, if you're a slowpoke like me. but the patterning is apparent even at fairly low speeds.
