Hello,

I enjoy programming/web design and I am also getting into cycling! I have found that I could maybe combine the two and produce a website where cyclists can log various information about their cycling.

This will be a free site, designed by me, and if people are interested in such a site, please let me know! I will need tips on the type of data people want to record and also, what type of calculations they want to be able to perform on their recorded data.

Here are some things I have thought of:

*Post a ride at a time, including distance, a description of the ride and maybe top speed, average speed etc.

*Have an array of operations you can perform on your own data like: Total distance since you started the log. Weekly, monthly distances. Average distances etc.

*I would assume people would want their data kept private, but there could be an option to make your data public if people click on your name from a list, based on an age category or type of rider etc.

If people think this is a good idea, I'm sure there are many more features that would be useful.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Nick.

P.S The reason I'm doing this is to improve my web design and programming skills! I've found the best projects are ones that produce a useful result.

There used to be a site called Bikeprolog.com that did just what you are planning. I think it went under or something though.... not certain.

You can also do the same thing on activebody.org.

Thanks for thinking of all of us!

Sorry for not doing _any_ research... I got a bit ahead of myself!

The main idea was to start of with simply functionality, then build the software into something that was 'scultpured' into a very useful site.

Anyway, I'll think of something else that might be useful!

You can also get specific software for this purpose - check out www.cyclistats.com

But hey, there's always room for a better mousetrap.

bikeprolog.com is still around -- or at least, it was the last time I checked in (Wednesday I think). Seems to have disappered right now though.

Hey I'm up for a new site, and I think you have a good idea. I see from the above posts that there are other sites like this, but you would be putting things on your site that we would want and I think this is great! I would be very interested in putting data on this site. I have a garmin gps watch that plots out maps and such and I would find it valuable to have this information where I could always get it. It could also help people who would ride the same trails as me to see what is where. Go for it!

Hey there!
Pl8er pretty much expressed the same view on this, as me. I think it sounds great.. free, customized specifically by you, for us! Can't beat that, right? :) Besides, you seem to have a talent you need an outlet for.. bring it on. Share some more of your ideas for the site with us!

I've been thinking of doing the same thing for months now only I would host it on my home LAN. It would be nice b/c you can create it exactly as you want. I just never seem to have the time, thanks to this forum :) But anyway I am going to do mine with PHP Apache MySql. If that is what you were thinking I'd be happy to hack some code for you. I just wanted something to keep stats on miles, average speed, calories, ect... and perhaps produce graphs. Also something to keep a racing resume going. Anyway sounds like a great idea to me and good way to keep up with your programming/web design...

Ok,

It sounds like enough people are interested. Bear in mind, I am not an experienced cyclist, so I will really on suggestions. There will be a guestbook type repository on my site that can be used for suggestions. It'll be an easy way to make sure your suggestion is not being submitted twice.

I will be writing the software in PHP using a MySql database, and I'd be happy to give the code to anyone that's wants it. That way you can run it on your local machine if you wish.

jfmckenna, the graphs idea sounds interesting! That's an area of PHP I am not familiar with, and if you are, would you consider handling that side of things?

A last note to interested people, I work full time in a none computer job, so at times, progress may seem slow, but this thing will be built! I will repost here with the address of the 'ideas repository' when I have it working.

Cheers, Nick.

Yea when you get into let me know. I'll probably see your posts or you can pm me. I am not familiar with doing graphs either but what I love about php is that anything is possible and the on line community is great.

Alternatively, if you're interested in a Windows-based program (where your ride data is stored safely on your own computer), you might want to check out my CycliStats program (http://www.CycliStats.com).

It tracks all the normal ride data, plus bike maintenance, and your health stats (weight, resting heart rate, etc.). It also estimates calories, average wattage, and climbing for each ride.

You can download a free, fully functional, 45-day trial version from the website.

I just thought of another thing my website could provide! It could send you the data in a nice formatted style every so often so you could store it,

"safely on your own computer"

My idea was to keep things none commercialised(and safe). I don't think this is the right thread to advertise payware. Why pay for software? Just my opinion.

Cheers Nick.
