Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - ss

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My converted bmx bike is a single speed with a 55 inch gear not fixed though.
I think BMX bikes are the sh*t. There's some amazing tricked out stuff in that realm, the sky's the limit.
A ss BMX bike was my ATB through most of my teenage years. Took me through all of the deserts and mountains of L.A. county on damn near ss granny gear. I remember scrounging all my money to buy the cheapest 20" "road" tires I could find and extending the seatpost up to what looked like a ridiculous height. But it suited me well, on both dirt trail and pavement.

why not just ride a regular BMX?

For the same reason I don't ride a regular mtb?
I stopped riding that style before bmx was 'invented'.
Custom is sweet, when you know what you want-you build it.
I just thought it was a tuff little number, and was contemplating a similar build for my kid.

as far as custom is concerned, it works the same for BMX...and you end up spending about the same anyway...maybe less and there are more frames/parts to choose from.
at any rate, i was saying that not in the context of normal SS mountain bikes, but in response to that photo, which is of a 20" SS mountain bike. right? does a 20" bike really need a fork with 6" of travel on the front?

Does any bike really need a fork with 6" of travel on the front? ;)

one could make the argument that SOME bikes do...but i can't...even though i want to.
upon closer inspection, i think that bike is actually a regular 26" single speed. if that was a 20", the seat tube would have to be like, 3 inches tall in order for the proportions to be right...and the discs rotors would have to be TIIINY for them to be that close to the hub and still have that much distance between them and the rim...it could be a 24" though...maybe? it's also a weird angle...and i'm not sure if they (y'know, "them") make 20" tubless tires, but i'm also not sure if those are tubless...the rims sure look like it though...meh...it looks cool. and whatever floats yer boat. i wouldn't ride it if it's a 20"er...but that's because i already have a bmx.

Small frame.

aaah, so that's why he needs 6" of travel... (http://www.bike2build.nl/meerinfo/24b/toy9.jpg?PHPSESSID=04069e78a3e11bc9f6c16b7cda6e09fc) ;)
heheh, i kid. so it's a small frame with 24, or 26 inch wheels on it? if it's a 20", that just looks sketchy to have such small wheels on a frame with that kind of geometry (mostly the head tube angle). if he's gonna ride it like a BMX (i don't really see what else he could do with it), why not just have a bmx? eh i dunno...i guess i just don't understand some people...
it looks like it would pull up really awkwardly, and the back end would come up faster than the front end (or not at all, depending on how you pulled up) and i'd end up crunching my nuts on the stem or something.
