My boyfriend is interested in getting a hybrid bike.

He's a beginner and and plans on following me (also a beginner) on rides of 10-15 miles/trip at most. Use on roads and easy bike trails. He found a really good deal on 2 bikes:

'03 Giant Cypress LX on sale for $309 from $519
'03 Giant Cypress on sale for $219

Specs for LX:

Which is a better bike for a beginner? Will it hold up over time if he ends up falling in love w/ biking?

Thanks!

Hello, yo-jenny. I'm across the freeway from you, in Newark. Performance has some nice Giants at good prices. The basic Cypress for $219 will do a good job for you. For the price range of the LX, you might check out the next step up model with disc brakes. Another place to see some nice hybrids is at the Bicycle Garage, on Thornton Ave. There's a little shopping center with a broken up Shell Gas station at a traffic light. It's in the corner of the center. There's a cafe on the end by the street. They carry Specialized, and have some nice hybrids.
If you want to ride with a bunch of people, check out www.Fremontfreewheelers.org. Our FFBC Getting To Know Us ride is the second Sunday of every month ut of Newark Java. I'm leading that ride for March and April. It's a "no drop" ride, if you fall behind we wait for you. Everyone is welcome.

Hi Dchiefransom, my boyfriend ended up getting an '04 Giant Cypress from Performance. They're still putting it together so he hasn't gotten to ride it yet.

Thanks for telling me about the Bicycle Garage. It's good to know there are more bike shops in the area. I citysearched and only found Performance and Rei, so I ended doing my shopping in Santa Clara. I bought a Trek 7100 from Calmar in Santa Clara today.

The ride sounds great. How far do you typically go? Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to make it to March, but hopefully we can go in April.

I can't wait to start enjoying the great weather we've been having lately! Hope you are able to get some good riding in this weekend.
