I have a 12 yr old trek 5200 road bike. It uses a an 8 speed rear gear set. I want to buy a new wheelset that is built for a 9 or 10 speed cassette. Will these new wheels fit and work on my old bike using my old 8 speed dreive train?

Assuming you have a cassette system (almost certainly) and the new wheel's freehub is Shimano-compatible (which I assume the current wheel is), then yes, it will be a straight-forward swap.

yeah.. the width is the same.. 130mm.. i think?? 6 and ultra 7 use the 126mm width.

oops.. i just reread the OP. You can throw the shifter in friction and use the same derailleur. heck.. if you want to go STI, you can use the same derailleur still. ...unless it is not a shimano or pre-1997 dura ace.

I'm assuming you just want to continue using your 8s cassette. It will fit on any Shimano hub that is 9s (or variably called 9s/10s or even 8/9/10). The only ones to avoid say 10s only. These have taller splines and a slightly narrower hub body.
