Be nice Klein...;)
It changes per jump...easiest way is to hit a jump with speed and shift weight back when you get to the edge...in reality you don't want to lift as people with with each arm differently which causes a squirelly landing.
For a fast jump pedal up to the edge and the power pedal (aka pedal kick) off the edge. This takes practice as it is very much a trials move and the slower you go the harder it becomes.
Dropping to tranny is more technically difficult to do right but hurts less. The key is bike control and being able to match the bike with the tranny. To really learn bike control go find some dirtjumps (the kind with trannies) and learn to flow through them...you will gain the right control to match the landing...
Otherwise...practice..a lot...start small and work up...1 ft .. 3 ft ... 5 to 7 ft...

Oh and try and watch some movies, especially shore based movies, where all difference kinds of drops are used. And watch for each type.

You need to go out and practice...........................................

you dont need more tips. You need more practice, just find or make some small drops to try those...the second drop I described is the one you are looking for. The type of drop you are looking at is very close to what trials riders use but really isn't required except for 'no-runin' drops or high drops to flat on ht's. Otherwise you can usually get a bit of pedal and speed. Landing both wheels equal is actually a lot easier and safer for 90% of the riders out there.

Oh and they aren't actually lifting. They are pedlaing so hard the wheel comes up. They do pull a bit but most of the work is in the pedal kick they do.

o ok thanks so if i lift it up a little bit and pedal hard my front wheel will lift up?
and what gear r they on?

Gear is based on strength...this we really can't tell you.

Your going to be cut off if you keep posting a bunch of crap, we told you what you have to do, now go practice. Your probably a little kid, do you expect to just suddenly get really good at this by some magic words that somebody types? No......GO PRACTICE.

Here's the best advice i can give. When you approach the drop put all your weight over the handlebars and get your butt as far forward as possible.
Now that you've wrecked, do the exact opposite and see how it works

hahahahahahahaha haha...peter that was funny...:D
As said above start small. Even on a hard tail you can easily drop 4ft to flat without probs.
Find a ledge big enough that you can't roll over it. now just practice on this. Remeber keep weight a bit back on take off and try to land both wheels at same time or slightly back wheel first. If there is a run up hit it with more speed and it will be easier.
Also the guy in your picture is a lying tool- that is not 3-4 ft. The only reason he has his front wheel that high is because he is hitting thew drop slowly. When you learn to hit a drop at really slow speeds you will notice you lift the front end higher to give the rear wheel more time to leave the edge while still keeping the front wheel equal or higher than the rear.

get a running start on a small drop such as a curb or small hill go off end while leaning slightly back .repeat this until you are comfortable then go for larger.it will help you become "one" with what you are trying to do as well as getting to know and respect your bike without fearing it or the obstacles you wish to clear.with practice you will find that you are better than you thought and will gain valuable confidence .and who cares whether you are young or old like me its never too late or soon to push yourself in new areas.my hat is off to you for having the brass to ask this question.this is a good place to ask too.really good ,smart and patient people here with little exception
Closer to 6in :)
Thats more my speed. :roflmao:
kona_roastbika, You have been given some great advice from some very experienced riders. These guys know their stuff. Go out and practice like they say. Give it a few days. Then, come back with specific questions. Also, use the forum search function to get even more information..
Good luck. :)

I like that pic though. Might be a 'small' drop but its high up and pretty skinny for such a young kid. Impressive :)

makes me wish i was young enough to take the chance to fall off that ramp.id probably miss a month of work crashing in his back yard.the young people today seem to be willing to try anything even younger or is it just better equipment.and that was not a dig per say as much as a "cool your jets man"we all gotta start somewhere

GO STREET RIDING!!!!
Find a recieving ledge in your city/town/area of residence, and practice on that. You can even practice on curbs. Just pay attention on curbs. Manual a little bit and let you back wheel hit the street first. This is the easiest way to start. Then find a three foot or a two foot drop. Pedal, manual, and try to get both wheels to hit the ground at the same time. Bmx taught me how to drop.
