Took the less-than-300-miles-new V-Rex on a rural Training Ride this evening. I tried this a couple of times before, on the other 'bent, and experienced being dropped by the pack pretty much immediately. Those "young guys" turned out to have a large contingent of guys my age or older. It took them about four miles to drop me today! That's progress! I was able to maintain 20mph for ten miles or so, which is blazing by my standards. Rode with a couple of other slowpokes for a while and then, by myself, in the process of trying to pick out the correct Dan Henrys to get in the full 24 miles, got confused because there were markings at every intersection for lots of different rides, ended up doing the full 27 miles at 18.5mph, which is a personal best (for > 10 miles). I'm finding that the V-Rex is easier to ride faster. And very comfortable.

18.5 mph and you got dropped? Remind me to stay out of Indiana.

If I could average 18.5 MPH my group would have to work like heck to drop me. Yes they could drop me but it would take a lot longer. However if you average that you would drop me a lot faster than in the first 4 miles.

That sounds like a group best kept in a cage with a good supply of raw meat.

I am never dropped no matter how fast the group. The really fast guys and gals just provide variable miles (or yards) of company and inspiration. <G>

The advertised speed for this biweekly club ride is 18mph but it is always faster.

A week ago the Thursday peleton (over 20 riders) intersected my commute home twice. The second time 1/2 mile from home I picked up the pace to tag along. I had to hit 26 mph to catch up! The graybeard at the rear of the group told me they average 25mph. Sheesh!
After 18 months of 3+ days per week commuting and I'm no faster (15 ave is good, record is 19).
