I am considering buying a bike that is built with Columbus Thron tubing-
Does anyone know how 'good' this is, and what it is equivalant to in reynolds eg 531/653 ???
thanks

pingupingu,
I'm passing this info on from another forum that I posted a similiar question:
"from what I read about it a couple of years ago regarding its modulus of elasticity & tensile strength, it appears to be comparable to the Reynolds 501-to-520 tube sets. How the tubeset is shaped ,butted and built into the final product is more important than the name on the label."
thron is CrMo steel.. derived from the el/os, it is a slightly heavier steel as compared to the top end Columbus CrMOs.
Thron Tube Sets have lightness, rigidity, and a very good price / performance ratio. it has double butted tubes and can be lugged or fillet brazed. Its double butted wall thickness allow it to be an excellent entry level choice for both road and track

it is the lower level columbus tubing. the high-end columbus tubing is the foco or ultrafoco.

Very good tubeset if you ask me. Most of us need/want longevity and strength over light weight, and Thron is perfect for this, especially if you're looking at cheaper frames. Sure there may be better tubes in a similarly priced frame, but there's no reason not to go with Thron.
