Folding Bikes - ergon grips

I just got this ergon grips for my bike:

you see the black metal thingy at the tip of the grip? i noticed you can move up and down with it. what is the optimal position should be set for it...horizontal, vertical, 45 degree angle or what? i noticed it can easily be move up and down...1st question can you rest your hands on that black thingy and 2nd question i dont want to put my hands on that thing and all of a sudden move on me and lose my grip and crash and burn. so can you secure it and if so how?

It sounds like you need to tighten the allen screw on the back of the bar end. Neither the grips or the bar end should move at all while riding. As far as the angle is concerned, I leave mine somewhere between vertical and 45 degrees. In all honestly though, I find that the grips themselves are quite comfortable even on 25+ mile rides. I occasionally use the bar ends to change hand positions every once in a while but spend most of the time on the grip part. With all that being said, I think the best thing to do is to carry an allen wrench with you while riding and adjust the angle of the grips and bar ends until you find the position that is most comfortable to you.

Uhh...The comfiest position is I think the general idea
Put them on kind of slack; sit on the bike and move them to a position where they feel best.
Then tighten them.
Ta-dah.

1st question can you rest your hands on that black thingy ...

This page (http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/grips/grip_ergonomics.html) doesn't address the bar-end positioning or tightening, but it shows how grip angle can affect the nerves in the wrist.

2 last question....how do i know which ergon grip is the left or the right side?

and on ergon website it said the grip must be properly mounted...how do you mount the grip properly? just like the pix i posted earlier? horizontal 180 degree? remember i'm not talking about the bar ends...i'm talking about the grip.

On my ergon grips (installed on monday night, so they're fresh in my mind) there was a note that the head of the hex screws will be facing up when the grips are oriented correctly (eg. on the correct side).

I got the smaller model without the plastic stays/grips that you have at the end, but if in doubt you should have this info with the grips.

what u r saying is that this guy installed it incorrectly since we dont see the hex screw and not facing up?

I'd have thought the idea would be to have the bolts facing downward to stop rainwater / crud filling up the hole, not to mention looking better if out of site on the bottom.
