On Wednesday we adopted three of the cutest little girl rats, one of which we forund after the fact to be preggers. Well last night (Saturday) right before bed her brood made it's entry into this world. LAst count was 7, and haven't checked them this morning. But mom is up and around and there are a plethora of little squeeks coming from inside the towel she has used for her nest.

Reminds me of the time when I was a kid that one of my brothers or sisters rescued a rat from one of our cats. It was spotted "pet-style" rat; it wasn't visibly injured by the cat, but we didn't have much hope for it. We were all expecting it to die.

Suprise! The rat was not only not injured but shortly thereafter it had babies! Just what my mother wanted. Of course we kids were delighted. We gave the babies away for pets when they were older. The mama rat was a pleasant and clean animal for a pet.

just so you know, two breeding rats will make in one year 1,500 new little baby rats. for some reason the females always seem to come prego.

good luck, hope you don't end up to your ears in rats.

cheers
kat

You're so right kat! We "did the math" based on a pair, with 12 pups to a litter, even mix of males & females at maximum producton... would net over a million rats if left unchecked. It's easy to see how this could be a problem with farmers & food stuffs warehousing.

We've been lucky. Been keeping rats for about four years and this is the first pregnant female we've encountered. All our boys are kept segregated until they get neutered, then we introduce them into the colony

oh *whew* you keep rats and know about that... good. my mother had adopted a guinepig when she was younger that was supposed to have been a male. they were very shocked when he had pups about a week later. a year after that they had over 500... the hawks around these parts picked off most of them. not sure what they did w/ the rest of them but they did thin the heard down to 2. think the hawks got those last two though if i remember correctly. (they were kept out in the old chicken coup.) i just wouldn't know what to do w/ that many animals, obveously neither did my mother or grandmother. (other than to feed the local wildlife.)

i have one male guine pig (roadkill). i made sure he was male when i bought him. and he's WAY phat! about the size of a small rabbit... WAY WAY WAY phat!

cheers
