Hey everyone, I have a bike with a cartridge-style square-taper BB installed that has its splines (20 teeth) broken off on the drive side.
1) Is there a way to remove the BB?
2) If I don't care that much about performance, can I just leave it in there? Will it suddenly break and fall out?
Thanks.
1) If the retaining ring protrudes beyond the hanger tube, a big-ass channel-locks or pipe wrench will get it (be sure to turn in the correct direction). If not, a hammer and chisel and a whole lot of swearing.
2) Assuming you mean the splines that are used to screw it into the hanger tube, they have nothing to do with how it performs.

Sounds good. My only concern about #2 was that the body near the drive-side got screwed up along with the splines -- and that at any moment it could literally disintegrate and send itself out with the crank.

I have removed stripped BB cups with a big pipe wrench.
Last ditch method only.

Umm, you screwed up BB shell enough that it took out the splines on the part that screws the BB into the shell? I think you may have screwed the frame. How did this happen? Any Pics?
