So I finally got a map of my whole route from this summer made after doing some manipulation with Photoshop. To commemorate, I thought I would upload a few of the better pictures to share. I am quite proud of them, considering that I'm no photographer and they were shot on some tiny Pentax consumer digital camera.

How many days? You covered some ground if it was just this summer. I just took a road trip w/ the fam and we did the same cali route. Started at the bottom and headed north. We turned off at san fran though. Did you do the PCH?

Your trip looks awesome and I deem you a photographer. It dosnt matter what kind of camera you have, its all about the compisition.

Nice shots- I especially liked the clouds/shadows at sunset, the melon, and the partner in the pipe.

I figure that I spent somewhere near 75 days actually bicycling. The entire thing was between June 1 and September 19 though, with some longer stops here and there.

Dan I really like your photos.
I have a question for you.
I am going on my first long tour from Los Angeles to Southern Nebraska. And your route you have pictured above is something I am looking at growing. I was wondering if you had it routed out in detail so that I might be able to take a look at it and maybe even get some suggestions from you of some highways that you would have taken if you knew before hand of.
Thanks for you post,
Ben

Well the big thing for me in the Southwest was the desert heat. It got up to 115 in Southern California. It would be similar going through Nevada I imagine depending on the time of year. You might want to go by the Grand Canyon, it is roughly on your route. I missed it by about 30 miles just because the roads there didn't go where I want. I can't remember any of the specific roads though, though I know that some were bad and some were good. 4 lane divided highways are always great for having wide shoulders. I only remember that the 93 in Kansas had virtually no traffic, but people said it gets very busy with oversized trucks come harvest time. I guess you wouldn't be going through there anyways.

Also Wolf Creek Pass over the Great Divide is ridiculously steep and slow to get up. I think I must have taken 2 hours to go 8 km gaining about 3 to 4 thousand feet of elevation. And then I took about 15 minutes to do the same distance down the other side.

Oops, I put the quote in there to reply to, and then I forgot to reply.

I filed a police report about my stolen bike, and never heard from it again. It is probably pulling a baby attachment filled with beer bottles and garbage bags right now. I kept my panniers with me, but lost the frame pump, water bottles, rack, hex keys, spare tubes, sunscreen, electrical tape, wrench, patch kit, lube, grease, pen, maps, and spare odds and ends.

I picked up a new Schwinn Letour from Performance Bicycle as a replacement. It ran me $550 plus tax and then another $100 or so for extra stuff I needed.

I was also unexpectedly stuck in San Francisco for an extra 3 nights because it happened on a weekend, and I couldn't do much shopping on Sunday. I spent one night in a hotel with some friends I met on the way. It was pretty tight though, what with seven individuals fit into a single room. There wouldn't have been space for my bicycle if I had had it, and I don't think I would have slept very well if I hadn't passed out drunk. I spent the next night camped out in some trees out of the way in some park on a hill top. Hills in Frisco are really steep which probably helped to keep the riffraff from hauling themselves up there. And then the next night I somewhat imposed myself on the generosity of another person I had met on my travels who happened to live in San Francisco.

The worst part of the whole thing was probably hauling my panniers around everywhere. Lucky I packed light.
