This is a simple question (I hope). First, I'm not a framebuilde (whish I could be) so bear with me. I have an older GT mountain bike that I've rebuilt into an very nice single speed as my main ride and really enjoy it. It has a U-brake at the rear that I dislike and wish I had cantilevers. Obviously I'd need catilever studs brazed-on and would need to carefully grind off the old U-brake studs. I live in the middle of nowhere (but a nice nowhere) in Iowa and have zero resources for such a thing. There are pleanty of welding and machine shops here that mostly make or fix farm equipment. So, is it possible for a farm town mechanis to safetly braze these to my frame without destroying my favorite bike.

Also, am I crazy for even wanting to do this?

It certainly could be done but don't forget that you will need to repaint afterwards. Sounds like a lot of effort for what you get out of it.

I have a top-o-the-line mtb bike frame that I received as a warranty replacement when I broke my original frame. Unfortunately, it was made in the one year everyone put u-brakes on mtb bikes (1988?). I don't really care for the u-brake either but I've learned to live with it as changing it out just doesn't seem worth it.
