Fifty Plus (50+) - I've joined Cllub Tombay, and I have pics!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Took a pre-debate ride today, and decided at some point to take a brief rest. DD was riding just behind me. I slowed down, unclipped on the right, and realized to my horror the bike was beginning to lean to the left. Sure enough, and in slow motion, over I went.
DD immediately said, "Oh, Sweetie!"
Then she said, "You can join Club Tombay!"
Then she said, "Do you want me to get pics?"
Notice, she didn't say, "Are you alright???" :notamused:
Well, I landed with my iPhone in my jersey pocket (and I had JUST bought a cover yesterday, thank God!) so I handed her the phone. She snapped while I hammed it up. It actually was rather funny.
The only damage to the bike was that the plastic thingie at the end of the drop bar popped out and I popped it back in, and the saddle was askew, so I fixed that. I had no road rash and felt fine. We pedaled home and had a few laughs.
But now, several hours later, my left knee is throbbing and I've put it on ice and taken some ibuprophen.
Anyway -- where do I get the membership paperwork? I want all the benefits of Club Tombay membership!
And has anyone ever thought of putting together a Club Tombay jersey?

Congratulations!:thumb: The only benefits I've enjoyed so far is living to tell about it - twice.
DD said exactly what my hubby did when I took my first fall.... "Oh sweetie!" I wonder which is worse.... falling, or watching our loved one fall.
Seriously I'm glad you weren't badly hurt. Your knee may hurt more tomorrow though...

Oh, the horror of laying the white bike down!
Mine has fallen on both sides once each.
Welcome to the club!
Hope the knee feels better tomorrow.

That took longer than I expected.
Have you been riding regularly since going clipless???
Glad to hear that the lesson was relatively harmless.

The hi-viz jersey should keep the toddlers on their trikes from running over you! :D
Glad you and the bike are O.K.
I'm a little nervous as I'll be moving towards some kind of retention devises on my
Volae. My feet tend to fall off the pedals when I hit un-noticed bumps. I guess I'll
put it off for a while yet. Too many of us seniors laying about on the sidewalk could
give the youngsters the wrong impression.

Where would we send the yellow raincoat.
Clearly it was the extra weight of the iphone that unballanced you!

How's your handlebar tape? If it's OK, it means you did good.
It's important, as you are falling, to keep a firm grasp on your handlebar drops. That way your hand will absorb the fall and it won't scuff your handlebar tape. On a Tombay fall, as you have learned, your butt is still on the saddle so the saddle might get pushed to the side but it can't get scuffed. Your bottom leg usually saves the frame of the bike from scratching.
Bodies heal. Bikes have to be fixed.

Is it just me, or does that photo look....uh, well.....maybe.....staged? Practically no bike damage, or road rash? The circumstances sound right, I've done that myself before, but.....? :o
Were there any more witnesses, other than the lovely DD? Don't wanna be heaping all the benefits of Club Tombay membership on a pretender! :D
Just sayin.... ;)

DG already admitted that it was staged, but it's still a great pic. I think it's, actually, the only Club Tombay pic we've seen. I'm a little disappointed in DD's lack of compassion though...I thought surely she'd inquire if Ruby was OK. Welcome to the club DG.

I KNEW it was staged....just my feeble attempt to inject some humor, with the idea that DG had faked the fall to gain his much wanted entry to the "exclusive" Club Tombay.
I'll have to leave the comedy to the professionals.... :o

The photo isn't staged, but I did "ham it up." I was lying there exactly as you see me, and when DD took the camera, I did the "thumbs up" thing.
Why, the idea that I would fake a fall just to get into Club Tombay! :D

So let me get this right. You were riding on the sidewalk, and your bike fell onto the grass?
Yup. You definitely deserve that Club Tombay membership. You can send me a check for $700 billion in a plain unmarked envelope if you want. I'll forward the membership certificate, and then fix the U.S. financial system while I'm at it.

I wanted to take a brief off-bike break. I pulled onto the sidewalk in search of a shady tree nearby. You can see the trunk's shadow.

The Official Club Tombay Rulebook states:
"In order to gain membership, the applicant must submit one of the following: an eye witness report, unedited photographic evidence, or the sworn affidavit of a Club Tombay member currently in good standing..."
I believe DG has met this laughably low threshold for CT membership. Perhaps Dnvrfox will develop a poll to determine those voting in favor of Gee's membership.

I like the pic and have no problems accepting the veracity of DG's claims. I think he would have liked to have retained bragging rights for never falling in clipless.
So how's your knee today, DG? I remember mine hurting much more the day after the first fall. It took weeks for the bruises to heal. The scratches on the bike will never heal.

I did the same thing but to the right and I did get a nice scrape on the knee.
20 years ago I went over on the right and the chain ring got me and I still have 5 teeth marks on the inside of my right leg (My Badge)

There was one other posted but he was not a 50+ member- just a youngster out riding with some old gits. And taken just as he was getting out from under the bike.

I'm not so sure about that last part. What's the point of membership seeing as how there was neither blood nor ridicule involved? I vote we send him back out to try again.
Oh and "I don't use clipless pedals" Tom Bombadil shouldn't even be allowed to post an opinion on this thread.

You are too picky. Mr. Bombadil has fallen with half clips. In my club Tombay, it's all about the fallen. Tom has bit the dust. He is in. :thumb: I'm the registrar, and I have spoken.

Well, no questions except that I haven't fallen. There is an open invitation for me to join Club Tombay should I fall in half-clips, but that hasn't happened yet.
I came very, very close in my PowerGrips. I was in the process of falling to my right with my right foot stuck in my PowerGrip, but I was too close to the wall of my garage and I simply extended my right arm and propped myself against the wall, whilst I removed my foot from the foul contraption.

HI,
I ve dropped the mountian bike 7 times to date since July, 3 of the times I bled last time was the worst,
I unclipped to cross at a bike trail and didn't notice the sloping grade and gravity won, I was unclipped on the left but my right shoe was stuck good, fell to the right very slowly it was sureal. awww sh___
I did pull my foot out of the shoe, had blood running all the way to the sock, and had to waste good drinking water to rinse off the red badge of blood didn't wish to scare pedestrians.
Its funny it never hurts , I am rather embarrased on the cement:o..
THis time was a hoot My shoe was stil in the clip and I was standin in my socks , on the side walk with blood dripping down my leg.
It looked really deep but after the shower and a good scub it was only 3 dings and a good scrape, dang nab it the last one just healed on that knee.
DOUG
POst script my left shoulder has a bruise like it hit the habdle bar or a tendon tear, it dosen't hurt, although i did manage to stress my left hand its a bit sore.
Jeeze I need to stop crashing and burning. maybe carry a few battle dressing and a splint.I do have a cell phone with 911 on speed dial.....

Now that's a Tombay fall!
My best one actually predated clipless pedals. I was using toe clips with real cleats on the soles of my shoes that locked into the pedals. When you're riding that combination, you have to pre-plan your stops a bit.
Anyway I was riding with my son who was 7 or 8 at the time. I saw a friend who was standing on his porch and I decided to ride up to talk to him. It was only after I came to a complete stop that I realized how thoroughly I was clipped into both pedals. Not only did I take a sloooo motion fall, but it also took at least 3 or 4 minutes to disconnect myself from the pedals while laying on my side. Considering the fall, a non-bicycling witness, and happening in front of my son, that has to count as maximum humilation points.
My son told me later that he'd prefer not to ride with me when I was wearing the cleated bike shoes.

I slipped on some eucalyptus leaves going up a curb. That's not falling. I'm sticking to it :p
But, now that I recall, there were three times when I first started riding my Kaitai 2 1/2 years ago.
Once was when I lost a screw to my left trap, went to pull my foot out going uphill, the trap just turned with my foot and down I went. OK, I can live with that.
The second was, again going up hill, and my chain dropped, jammed, and down I went. OK. Fine.
The third time was when I was riding circles in front of the house and I cut my radius a little short, got my front wheel sideways. Dropped like a stone. Tore my sweats... might even have been a little blood. And my neighbors across the street had a front row view out their windows. To their credit, no one ever said a word. Can you say "Embarrassed"?

That sounds like a good one. The "neighbors watching" is where you score the big points.
If your friends start coming out onto the porch holding cards with big numbers printed on them, like the gymnastic judges use, you'll know that you have a real problem. I think that might be what Bombadil is trying to avoid.

I'm not going to hijack DG's magnificent thread to address my clipless issues again, which have been addressed in other threads. Other than to simply state that I'm not convinced that the benefits of clipless do much of anything for me, while the disadvantages are bothersome.
