Hello everyone I am interested in getting involved w/ Mountain/Road biking. Would like some advise on beginner bikes to purchase. Looking to buy used/new bike around $300 and under for a quality bike or atleast what would be considered quality to a newbie.

Here are some that I found in a local trader paper:

1.Specialized 21" moutain bike: alum. frame,shimano shifter,24spd,ex. cond., $225

*waiting for call back on type and year...

2.Schwinn Mesa- "Good for pofessionals, rock shots, titanium frame, alum wheels, very light, more gears than you would ever need" , on board tire pump, two tone paint $300

*Curious about good questions to ask

3.Trek 800 10 speed asking $150

*Seems like a mediocre bike

4.Cannondale M200 $125

*Could not find info searching the web

5.2000 GT Rebound $275

*Does not seem interesting

I though the mesas were the lower end models for schwinn? Can anyone back this up? I am 99% sure its not a titanium frame.

Also for the first one, is 21" too big for you? What is your height and weigth? This could help us help you find the right bike.

ops i was right...mesa was the lower end model, and definetly not titanium. I was thinking of moab and that was the higher one.

I'm 6'1" 195lbs.

Hey GuyL,

Get thee to your local bike shop. You can find a BRAND NEW entry-level mountain bike for around $300. The shop will sell you the right size FRAME for you, and the bike will have a factory warranty. Plus, they usually will include a free tune-up with your purchase.

While there, ask if there are any USED bikes available. Most shops will take trade-ins on bikes, or most of the mechanics will know of someone getting rid of their bike.

There are good deals out there. I know someone selling their hardly used Specialized P.2 for $400. That's about $300 off of new. (I may buy it myself for that little money)
