Hi, although I've been a lurker for the past few months, I've finally decided to introduce myself and I rather do it here in my local area forum then the welcome forum.

My story:

I've rode bikes(and skateboards) all my life, except the last 10 years. Which were bad physically for me. I weighed in at 220 due to stressfully sitting in front of a computer all day at work writing code and other silly clone valley type of software work. I had gotten fat and extremely out of shape. It got to the point where just walking would equal me sweating like a black untrimmed husky on a shingle roof in the middle of a heat wave. I felt like I was dying just walking up a few stairs. It wasn't just from working and having a family and stuff, there were other health issues dealing with pain relief and such. But anyway...

Something had to change.

The last few months I started riding my old bike again ('93 costco Skykomish). Yeah I'm a 32 year old male, and I was riding a 15 year old womans bike. But it worked, and I initially got back into somewhat better shape using it.

I have wanted a road bike ever since I first rode my brother-in-law's rode bike about seven years ago. It was so freaking fast compared to my Skykomish mountain bike beater. The feeling of being near top speed, eyes tearing up, feeling connected to the bike like it's an extension of my being. I wanted one so bad but they were always too much money and I had other hobbies. But three weeks ago I finally decided to get one. I now weigh about 210 and I ride up to 8 miles per day. Although I try not to be, I'm a serious gear head and when I get into a hobby, I start soaking up all the information I can get my hands on like a dryed out sponge in a swimming pool. So here is what I got:

Cannondale Six 13 5:http://video.cannondale.com/images/08/bikes/CUSA/spec/8RCT5D_blk.jpg
Except mine is in red.

and I got speedplay frogs pedals and forte shoes.

My goals are to start commuting to work(about 15 miles) on bike and get down to 190 lbs. I'm not quite ready to do the commute yet, but possibly in another week or so I'll be ready. I live in Milpitas and work in Mountain View. I look forward to meeting the local cyclists.

So anyway, Hi

Hi! And congratulations on your new journey to lose weight and get into shape.

Your story is similar to mine. Except that I'm a stay-at-home dad. Last April I got on the scale and was surprised and dismayed to see it read 205. I started riding again and decreased my food intake. Now I'm down to 165 and in much better condition than when I started this. I'd still like to drop another 10. We'll see how that goes.

Anyway, good luck on it! Let us know how you progress.

Welcome Slumbermachine,

I did not do the get in shape and get a bike thing until I was 42 so you are way ahead of the curve.
I went from 235 to 188 and now I ride 300-500 miles a month.
Keep it up and you will see some amazing changes in both body and soul. I promise you that.

The community here is very supportive and can teach you a lot. No such thing as a stupid question here. They sure helped me over the last two years.

Speedplay riders unite! There are not that many of us, but since Fabian Cancellara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabian_Cancellara) is one of us, it makes up for a lot.

Nice intro Slumbermachine - that's a really nice bike you've got there. It's amazing how much cycling can suck you in - I started off riding a hybrid again back in June of 07, and still recall my first painful 5mile ride out and back to my house, stopping 3 times on the hills coming home to get my heartrate and breathing back under control. It's amazing what you can achieve when you get into the groove, and the folks in the NorCal section are exceptioanlly helpful/friendly - given you've been lurking a while, you can probably tell that. Are you south bay? (Given your Si Valley comment)

Congrats! I went from 215 to 195 riding a stationary, then 195 to 185 on a real bike.. :) I'm back up a bit now but I just need to get on the bike more.. and a lot of it is muscle now anyway ;)

It's an easy/fun way to stay in shape for sure.

Welcome. You might ask these folks for route suggestions. A road that seems okay with a car might not be as good on a bike.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cycling, and riding yourself into better health. I began riding at 36 due to stress related heart problems. 5 years later there are no signs of heart problems, and Im actually racing my bike against much younger riders. Embrace your new found hobby, as this one will lead to changes for the better.
