Road Cycling - Made the ultimate dumba$$ mistake today...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Headed out for a nice flat 35 miler today... the first nice sunny 60deg day around here... about 15 miles out... I feel it get really rough in the back... flat tire. And to my suprise the tire wrenches, patch kit, and c02 inflator that I had taken out for some reason or another hadn't magically hopped back into my pack....
So I sat there for twenty minutes hating myself for wasting such a perfect day's ride on such a stupid mistake waiting for my wife to come pick me up...
Just my luck it will rain every weekend until July now...
I've done that, I was only about 8 miles away from home though...BUT you at least had a phone and someone to call. I hitched for a while...finally got picked up about 2 miles from the house.
You'll never forget the tools again...good lesson.

Dude, don't say that. Repeat after me - "the weather is always gorgeous here in Oregon, especially on the weekends."
Sorry to hear about your mishap.

Dude,
you need a rain bike or some SKS fenders on your bike. Why should a little rain stop you ?

Rain doesn't stop me... but I much prefer a nice sunny day :)
ah Grassjakey, you have learned an important lesson today, one you will never repeat as long as you live. You must become one with your tools for they are your life's blood, for without your tools your life's blood becomes your wife's to abuse.

If it's any consolation I went out on my CX bike last weekend without a chain tool. Guess what happened? I actually managed to pound the link some what back together with two rocks(my girl friends suggestion as I was predicting the long gloomy walk back to the car) and fortunatly most of the ride to that point was up the mountain and the weather was nice... Oh to learn the hard way is there a better way?

If we have to race in the rain, we'd better train in it.

UMMMM. HAVE ROCK. FIX BIKE.
Good one.
Wrapped my rear derailleur around my tire on the mountain bike one week, broke the chain the next, broke the chain again the week after that, (bought a new chain) then broke two ribs.
So much for off topic.
Went on a really long (street) ride one very early and cold morning. Got about ten miles from home and reached for my very empty water bottle. *DOH!* :(
Haven't got caught in need of my repair kit just yet.

It's not an "Ultimate Dumb@ss Mistake" if you can still breath and stand up.
"Ultimate" mistakes on a bicycle usually involve MDs and often Coroners.

If I were you, I'd return those wrenches, patch kit and CO2 inflator because they are defective! I think they should have jumped back back in your pack, or at least run along beside you!
ROFL! I like to see the mistakes of others as it makes mine seem more normal! Like packing two CO2 inflators, two patch kits, and not one tire wrench! I did find out that in a pinch, the end of the skewer can be used. It doesn't work worth beans, but it keeps you busy until another cyclist takes pity on you and lends you his wrenches!

Been there.
Flat on a ride, use my last tube. Next day head out again with no tube. "What are the chances I'll flat two days in a row?"
Never tempt Murphy. Ended up sitting on the side of the road waiting for my wife to pick me up.

been there done that. rode to work 20 miles. got two flats 18 miles into the ride. no biggy. walked the last two miles then worked an 8 hour shift. dickhead, now exhusband took the phone off the hook so he could sleep. (knowing i'd need a ride home!) after an 8 hour shift i got to push my bike home. i pulled in at 6am, had to be back at work by 7:30 am. i was P.O.'d beyond the scope of P.O.'d. never relied on that a$$hole again. course we devorced 7 months later...
cheers

Anyone ever try those flat-less tires? I think they are filled with some sort of expandable foam. I don't see how they could work as well as pneumatic tires, but I was just wondering.....
