Calif. lapdogs can stay just that in moving cars

Posted: Sep. 27 9:39 p.m.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Hollywood celebrities can continue to drive with animals nestled in their laps.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is vetoing a bill to fine motorists $35 for sharing the driver's seat with lapdogs or other animals.

Republican Assemblyman Bill Maze says the practice is distracting. He introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap.

Schwarzenegger says he's signing only bills that are "the highest priority for California." And a lapdog ban isn't one of them.

They don't need new laws to keep this from happening. Just enforce the ones they already have.

I generally concur, but every now and then I see disgustingly antisocial behavior, such as texting while motoring (or driving a Metrolink commuter train), which is technically still permitted in California until 1 Jan 2009. If people are too stupid to know that it is dangerous to drive with a dog in the lap, we unfortunately may need a law.

They are doing it only for their own safety. Apparently they are excellent cushions upon impact, rather like children.

Damn! I'd never thought of that! So there really is a functional purpose for lapdogs!!!:D

You are a sick, sick person.

I like your way of thinking.

It's not the dog that is a distraction, it's the driver who pays attention to the dog on his lap. My mini-poodle loves to go driving and for the most part will sit in the passengers seat observing the surroundings but sometimes likes to sit on my lap, he only really does that when I am driving slow or when there is someone he doesn't want to sit on in the passengers seat. He never puts me into a possition where I am unable to control my car, my hair on the other hand which needs to be cut has caused a couple of problems especially if I want the windows open which for the most part I do.

Sorry, but even though I value those who enter government service, it's hard to me not to grin at a posting that mixes lap dogs and politics.
