I did. It was tough to watch but I knew it had a happy ending so I didn't mind so much.

after experiencing the movie on opening day and all the subsequent intelligent, educated commentary from various religious sects i find more and more disturbing textures to the movie. from the music to when and how the 'devil' appears to him to the liberties mel took in creating the evil counterpart in his viewpoint.
just remember, it is not a documentary, not a scholarly interpretation. it is a hollywood movie. and if you note that jesus lost more blood in the movie than a human has then you can see the over-the-top hollywood style in action.
all in all an intense movie. there is little story telling, so the director assumes you know the players intimately.
but don't worry sweetness, it isn't as religiously intense as buckeye football.

Yeah, saw it last night. Seeing it sure gets the point across.

What point? I'm not being fractious, I want to know.
I have yet to see it, I'll wait for the crowds to thin a bit.

Weren't too many people when I went. By "point" I mean Gibson did a good job of conveying what happened in the final hours. Unfortunately all the media is concerned with is how much money it has made and the controversey...go figure.

I thought it was well made, very intense... pretty graphic, but not as graphic as I was led to believe... more blood and gore in "Kill Bill" than in "The Passion"
I'd recommend it... just don;t take kids... I must have had a dozen 8 year olds in there... stupid parents

Well, in that case,it's no different from any other hollywood film. I doubt that Mel Gibson made it without the intent of profiting from it. It's still a business.

Wooohoo! I finally saw it :) & I liked it very much. You are right, there wasn't nearly as much blood as some of the critics portrayed it to have. I have never heard a movie theater so quiet in all of my life. I like the fact that there were no opening credits, or previews. The theater we were in actually drew curtains open also...

Remember the table he was crafting, you know, the tall one? Did you see it later on in the movie? During the "punishment", the table that the weapons laid upon.
And the latter... the drop at the end of the movie. The single "rain" drop from above? :) A tear..
I actually didn't notice the table myself, someone pointed it out to me. But going back & reviewing still photos from the movie, sure enough!

I probably won't see this movie unless I can rent it for a dollar, only because I don't really see much in Mel Gibson's directing.
But if I ever get so cynical as to find humor in this type of writing, I'll definitely stop and reevaluate my life. Christ was a model for selfless human living. To denigrate selflessness, or to be unable to recognize it's role in mankind's development, reflects a two dimensional character.

But making a huge cash profit from it is ok?
Besides, the article has less to do with the life of Christ than it does with the brouhaha surrounding the current film about him.

I heard the movie was done entirely in Latin, Hebrew and some other ancient language. Considering how much Americans hate subtitles I am a little surprised it has made so much money.
Languages interest me and I don't mind subtitles so I DO want to see this film. I am just waiting for the crowds to thin out so I don't have to wait in line.
The ancient language is Aramaic. I think that it probably interested the viewing audience hearing these ancient languages, but that's probably more due to the subject matter. Americans will yawn at the idea of seeing a film in a foreign language unless it's about something really exciting or familiar to them. Those 'slice of life' films from europe just don't hold our attention. But this is about Jesus and the crucifixion, and when it comes to jesus I think an american audience would watch it in Heiroglyphics!
Do you think that the DVD will have outtakes?

I saw the movie and was amazed to see the way the Jews treated Jesus, anyway the movie was a little graphic but still a very good educational film.

I think it was more a case of 'some' Jews and 'some' Romans and 'some' of other races. It was actually Mel Gibson's hands that hammered in the nails. He wanted to make the point that it was all of us that put Jesus there.
South Park had a great parody about how seriously people take this moving. It Mel Gibson's interpretation and was made by Mel Gibson and his flunkies, not the Pope or any other respected religious person!

Over the top for blood close ups but in truch, most likly was worst. I didnt know all the players but the dudes in the bigining that wanted him dead were dickhead and the guys that enjoyed beating him and putting on the cross were to but they were forgiven. A better man then but because i wanted some lighting strikes.

Glad to see all those fears about the movie leading to anti-semitism were overblown.

Bs!!!
Am I correct to understand here that the posts here are, not understanding what the movie is about? Even if those who see it do not believe the Biblical reasons that are stated numerous times as to why Jesus did what he did, then understand that the Romans did this to people all the time. There were hundreds of crucifixtions done a day. The norm was to be crucified upside down then decapitated.
Research Roman crucifixtion. Even more intense :

I doubt they will... although I did see a "behind the scenes" deal on the movie... apparently Mel Gibson is quite a practical joker.. and he was crackin jokes all the time on the set... even during the flogging scenes... it was a weird dichotomy
jeff
One reviewer pointed out that Jesus happened to live in an area occupied by Romans and Jews. If he'd lived in, say, the fijian islands, people would have blamed the Fijians and said how terrible the Fijians treated jesus. It could have been anyone anywhere, it happened to be in Israel 2000 years ago where jews and romans lived.
It was an unforgettable experience in the theatres if you ask me.
Couldn't get off of my seat when the movie ended.

I am in total agreeance.. :)
Very well done film, in my opinion. The Aramaic (sp?) was barely noticeable, especially because Mel was pretty much limited on dialogue to what was actually worded in the Bible, which is very little. A touching and powerful film, and a very respectful portrayal of everything.
The appearance of Evil is the only thing that was really at odds with me. It confused me and I felt that the personification was out of place in the movie. But overall, on a scale of -pi to pi, I give it an e.

Well....I haven't seen the film yet? But have spoken with several people that have. Its kind of interesting that they have seemed so affected by it? Most movies are seen and forgotten. This one seems to have more meaning for most people. If it helps people to change their lives in a positive way, then, thats good.
I'll preface this with I have not seen the movie but I read the book.
I find that Mel's last move, Signs, had a similiar deeply religious
message, although I doubt many people really got it or knew about it
prior to going to that one.
Seriously I've heard that now he is going to redo Moses and the 10 commandments.
My favourite response to the entire "the Jews killed Jesus" arguement is
if they didn't you wouldn't have a religion.
Marty
There was a musical a couple of years ago that ran here in Quebec, "Les Dix Commandements." THe music itself was truly awful, what I heard of it, and it didn't run for very long.
