Yeah, not a real creative title :-). I started riding again at the beginning of the month, after about 17 years of being off the bike. Yesterday was my 53rd birthday, and today I rode 53 miles. My legs and butt hurt, but it's a good hurt!

Good for you,

Go out and do another 9 miles, and you will have a metric century!:thumb:

Way to go! :thumb:

Doing 53 miles after just one month of riding is pretty amazing progress.

I was off the bike for 45 days, from 8-3-08 to 9-17-08. On the 21st, I rode 42 miles and it wasn't bad. Went out in a head wind and came back in a tail wind. Did a few other shorter rides. Yesterday, I rode my age, 53, and it about killed me. There was a headwind all the way back.
I did about 20 today on the local hills and it felt fine.
Got to learn to work back up in moderation.

Thanks, and there is no way I'd have survived another 9 miles today!

Thanks! I knew I was pushing it a bit, but I figured that since I managed 37 last Sunday I could do the 53 today. I think I've skipped riding four or five days this month. Now that I've proved to myself I can do it, I won't feel the need to try it again for a while :-)

Hey cool idea and congrats!
I started about a month ago as well and think I may try that goal before the year is up or maybe before my birthday which is Oct12th . 56 miles sounds like a lot of miles for me though as 21 is as far as I have gone so far. I feel I can go farther though. I am doing 15 every night after work so I think I can...yeah I think I can.

I hear Jet is looking for a mile trade off so as a newcomer to the group- Get yourself in with one of the established members and do a quick 53 miles for him tomorrow.

Must be your first hard ride for years so well done---BUT- get out on the bike asap for a recovery ride. Just 10 miles or so to turn the legs. No effort- no hills and take a cushion for the butt.

Go for it! But work up a bit more gradually than I did. I did 37 the previous Sunday, and yesterday the first 44 was fine. The last 9 were _hard_. But if you spend the next couple months bumping it up a bit each weekend you should be fine.

I did 37 the Sunday before, and 28 the Sunday before that, so it wasn't quite as big a leap as it might seem. I did go out and do 12 easy miles today, the butt was actually fine. And as far as no hills, I know they really aren't hills, but right now speed bumps look pretty steep to me :-)

Thanks for the advice. I rode another 18 yesterday after work and will continue every night but the days are getting shorter and shorter. I got a computer and for a weird reason I seem to ride better with knowing what the heck is going on. I was averaging 18mph and thought that was pretty good too. I started spinning instead of mashing like I used to because of reading a thread about it here and that seemed much better as well. It seemed easier to ride the 18 than before while mashing or at least it was "better"?
