I posted this in the road forum as well, apologies for the duplication but I thought you folks might have some helpful tips:

I am looking for a Gore jacket to keep me cycling through the Chicago winter. I am set on Gore as I have owned a few of their products before and appreciate the durability.

I am looking for the warmest jacket possible, but cannot seem to tell from the Gore website which will be the warmest. If anyone can tell, or better yet if anyone owns a Gore jacket they would recommend for the winter I would be grateful. The Gore website is linked below.

Thanks in advance.

I like more of a "thermal" jacket. It's thick and has a lining. Good down to the 20's. When it get's _really_ cold, put a layer over that!

Honestly Bicycle Heaven in St Charles is selling Hincapie and Assos winter jackets at EXTREME discounts. Worth a stop to take a look. Tell Ara I said hi.

Gore is good. But there are lots of similar fabrics now. My favorite is EPIC.

This depends largely on your budget. For cheap... look at downhill ski jackets at tent sales. Leftover stuff from the previous year....

You have lots of choices when you get over $100, I use an ice climbing jacket
Patagonia used to make. It's also bright yellow which is quite visible...

If you can go higher, I'd go with a good shell and layer.

I strongly recommend a different apporach. I have a Showers Pass Elite rain shell. It is the best by far. Use this as your shell and then layer underneath. You have multi-use and much more control over your temps.

+1 on CC's layering suggestion. Get a good shell with zips for ventilation- (you may have one already, I use my goretex parka or my REI soft-shell) and use stuff you already have to layer underneath (fleece, thermal jerseys, under armor tops, etc.)

For an idea of what you should wear for various temp ranges check out this thread in the Winter Cycling forum, scroll down to post #4, I have found it most helpful: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=83913&highlight=clothing+winter+guide

Thanks for the help guys.

Psimet - my flatmate comes from that neck of the woods. I will grab a ride with him. Do they know you as "Psimet" at the shop?

I agree with John on the thermal being the best. Hammer Nutrition has thermal jackets cheap. If you've never ordered from them, PM me and you can save 15%.
