Touring - Photos of Pacific Coast Tour posted.

I'll try to post something on Crazy Guy but I have yet to post anything on my two trips to Italy. :)

how many days to complete the entire pacific coast tour?

From San Francisco to Santa Barbara, 9 days with 1 day off in Monterrey to see the aquarium (well worth the stop).

If I would do it over again, I would have stopped in Morro Bay. The ride from Morro Bay is not too bad but marginally interesting. The ride from Lompoc to Santa Barbara is mostly all freeway. Not a not of fun, except maybe the 7% grade outside of Santa Barbara, where I bicycle computer said i hit a max speed of 61 MPH! :)

There's a good back way for part of it. Kirkendall & Spring show it, sorry can't remember... something "hill" - and it means it. lovely.

Went mainly by local knowledge for part of the way. A good chunk of Morro Bay to Lompoc was back roads. Likewise Lompoc to Santa Barbara but it gets real ugly real quick.

Nice photos!!!! I miss the coast. That's a trip worth doing more than once.

Hey great pics. I work in Moss Landing, and I get those "best burritos" whenever I want 'em! (gloat gloat!) I've done that ride a couple times, and those pics brought back some good memories. Thanks for that! Will have to do it again soon.

That would be a good choice. We just passed through SLO on the way to Lompoc. Stayed in Los Osos to visit a Bike Forums member and then stayed in Lompoc to vist a Warmshowers host. Both extremely nice people. They made the bad bits of the road well worth it.

If I lived there I would be eating there every day! They do have the best in the world.

Other places of note:

Arguello Market on Arguello Street right outside of Golden Gate Park. They say they have the best turkey sandwiches in the world and they were right!


The supermarket near the Monterrey aquarium (sorry can't remember the name) made a delicious turkey sandwich for the ride to Big Sur.

Three Zero Cafe in the Half Moon Bay airport. The largest and most delicious breakfast burrito I have ever had.

A cafe in Davenport (can't remember the name). Gigantic and tasty hamburgers.


I was very pleased with the food just about everywhere. Many places were a little pricey but worth it, the portions were huge.
There were so many good places to eat.

I think that food is definitely one of the great pleasures of bike touring. I've always wondered if the food is really that good, or if I'm just really that hungry! Either way it works for me. (But you're right that the burritos at the Haute are fantastic... even when I'm not touring.)

Whale City Bakery might be the cafe in Davenport where you had the burgers? And I'd guess that Nob Hill is the supermarket near the Aquarium that you got your sandwiches (it's the closest one).

Thanks for the recommendation of the Three Zero Cafe in Half Moon Bay; breakfast burritos are a definite weakness of mine. I will definitely have to go check it out.

Glad your trip ended well after meeting you in Los Osos (South side of Morro Bay). I tend to agree about the trip south of San Luis Obispo...kind of boring. There is a nice route through Santa Maria and then East through the wine country around Los Olivos (was in some movie about Pinot Noir.... oh yeah...Sideways....If that kind of thing interests you then the side trip would be ride to Santa Maria from Morro Bay...then out through Sisqouc and down Foxen Canyon road to Los Olivos...end trip there.

The alternative is end it in San Luis Obispo and take the Coastal Flyer Bus to either LAX or Santa Barbara....

My ideal Calif Coastal trip would be something like fly to San Francisco...bus up to Fort Bragg or Legget...ride down to SF and then down the Coast as you did to San Luis Obispo...home from there...

lots of great coast, great food and great food...

anyway...was great to have met you and Dom!

Well since you are the one to tip your hand as one of our hosts, I guess it is OK to comment. ;)

Pat is a interesting, gracious and generous person. It was a pleasure spending the evening with him, swapping stories. If you ever have the chance to meet Pat, take it. I will guarantee, you will not regret it.

There was at least one other BF member (that will remain anonymous at this time, but he knows who he is :) ) that was nice enough to give us a very informative tour of San Francisco and generously lent us a map of the PC Route. It was also a real pleasure meeting this him.


I guess it just goes to show you, there are some pretty cool people that hang out on the BF. :)

Oh and not to forget the Warmshowers folks, we meet some pretty cool people from that organization too.
