I used to eat oatmeal every morning. I started a new job about a month ago, and I commute by car. I don't have time to sit around for a leisurely bowl of oatmeal in the morning. Instead I've begun eating lunchmeat sandwiches in the car. I don't think that is good for my health, so I'm trying to develop a portable form of oatmeal to eat for b'fast.
My plan is to be able to make up a big batch on Sunday and have it to eat all week long. I'm thinking along the lines of a cake-pan-full.
I'm not wanting something really sweet and sugary, like the oatmeal bars you can buy. Besides, they are expensive and they have additives. And, I want something I can fill up on.
I've made up a small test batch which consists of oatmeal, pecans, honey, and cinnamon.
My aim is to make it the consistency of cake and eat it with a glass of milk.
For some reason I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel.
Anybody have any suggestions?

You don't need to cook it, seriously. I never do anymore. You can wolf down a cup of rolled oats 'n milk in about 80 seconds while you're putting your shoes on.

Um ... make oatmeal cookies.

I have a great recipe for organic oatmeal, cranberry and cinnamon cookies. There is some butter and sugar in the mix, but not too much when spread out across the 25 cookies per batch. I worked them out to be 150 cal per cookie, I can't remember the fat grams per cookie at the moment. Cookies are a fair size, fairly chunky and quite filling.

I use them for on bike snacks for long rides, though I bet they'd make killer breakfast cookies as well. You could substitute dates or raisins etc for the cranberries.

PM me if you'd like the recipe, or you can just search around for one online that you like ...

I cook a bowl in 3 minutes while I shower. You do shower dont you? Why try and reinvent granola bars?

Get a little wide-mouth thermos. Put the oatmeal (Quick or Old-fashioned) and boiling water in it and put the lid on. Eat it anytime in the next 10 minutes to 4 hours.

Use 'old fashion' oats, not the minute stuff... with the OF oats you can much easier control the end consistency by altering cook time and amount of water. I cook mine on the long side with water on the low side, add afterward a glob of brown sugar and some maple syrup. The result is an EXTREMELY tasty, very paste-like gloop. Good stuff.

Got to wonder about this post... which is a better use of time?

a) eating a good breakfast.
b) reading/posting threads like this on the internet.

Ideally, posting the thread would lead the OP to the knowledge he needs to make eating a good breakfast possible.

(Unless the replies were mostly off-topic and derogatory.)

Just FYI, rolled oats are not truly raw, they have been slightly steamed.

Hmm, does that mean you skipped breakfast this morning to post in this thread? :p

This is exactly what I do too. I add flax too for healthy fats, slows absorption some so it depends on how fast I want digestion to happen, ill add nuts if using a blender. with fats added I feel fuller longer and up the calories. I put it all in a shaker bottle or ziplock bags ahead of time and just add water or milk when I wake up. I havent cooked oatmeal in a year but have drank nearly 50 pounds of it in that time.

Have you tried the Lean Plate Club baked oatmeal? You bake it in muffin tins.

How about this????
Wake up 5 minutes earlier. It depends how bad you want your oatmeal.

My wife makes super cookies that are suited for breakfast. Standard oatmeal recipe with steel cut oats, flax seed, whey powder, walnuts, currants, raisins, and choco-chips. Pretty much a health food dumpster. Do the same to whole wheat pancakes. They re-heat pretty good in the nuke.

thank you for that great recipe. I added some flax and wheat germ for fun, but that is my personal preference.

I tried this a few times and I like it. Replaced protein powder with raisins as that is what I had on hand. Replaced the water with whole milk. Use a Magic Bullet to blend it. Pretty convenient to be able to blend, chug and go vs heat stuff up and sit down to consume.

Old-fashioned oats, cold tap water, raisins; throw together and stir. Probably about 15% of my calorie intake for the last 25 years or so.
