Touring - Handlebar tape

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Which do you prefer: double taped, gel pads under tape, or other?

Being sensitive to vibration, I tried - on various bikes - Fizik gel pads plus padded cork tape (too thick), Fizik gel pads plus Fizik unpadded tape (OK, but I was expecting/wanting more), and padded cork tape by itself, which seems about right. I can not imagine double padded tape - seems way too bulky.
My main road bike had Fizik gel pads and tape, plus Bontrager "Buzz-Kill" handlebar plugs.
And I've got three non-touring bikes in my garage to tape, which will have gel pads under Fizik tape.

So far I'm pretty happy with the Fizik Bar Gel and Fizik tape. It's a little bulky, but it does add a little bit of cushion.

I've got some of those Specialized gel pads under the tape on my touring bike. Definitely nice.

Have you tried cork tape? It's actually not completely cork, but cork impregnated. I've tried lots of tape in my time, but cork tape feels best to me, and the longer the ride, the better. If you want gel, better in your gloves than on the handlebar.

I've got Specialized gel pads, one layer of foam tape, and two layers of cloth tape. Works great! My handlebars are fat but I have big (XXL) hands.

I agree on all counts.
