Touring - Hub Stuffs

I am almost done with deciding what to purchase for my new wheel build. The set will be going on a 1983 Univega Gran Turismo. I believe the spacing in the rear is 126mm. From what I have read, I should be able to fit a 130mm hub in there without doing much damage. Perhaps I could use a 135mm hub by cold setting, but I am a bit reluctant about that particular method. My question is, should I go for new shimano road hubs, or n.o.s. shimano mountain bike hubs? If anyone has any other hub ideas or options, please share, thanks!

Watch out for the old Shimano cassette hubs. Newer stuff takes a Hyperglide cassette and the older takes a Uniglide. Its harder to find the Uniglide cassettes. Loosescrews.com has them. They pop up on ebay too. I think Sheldon did a write up on this. I don't know too much about the difference. They use 2 different locking systems and the Hyperglide has an indexing (not for shifting but for alignment) tab.

What are you using for spokes and rims?

you can easily fit 130mm into a 126 mm if its steel. thats what i'm doing.

Uniglide was an early cassette system it worked by the tallest gear was the lockring so you would use to 2 chain whips to remove it. the only problem with this system is finding replacement cassettes is a pain in the ass. DON'T get one! its not worth spending the time building up a hub with one of these.
They only made these for a couple years so you'll probably not have to worry about it but double check first.

Other then that old mountain bike hubs could work. I was going to use one to build up a wheelset for my touring rig but I ended up buying a set of CR 18s laced to ultegras for 80 bux on CL. I had to replace the cones on the front though.

So far I am planning on using Velocity dyad rims. I haven't looked into spokes yet, I have read on this forum that dt swiss alpine III are pretty beefy. Any suggestions on spokes?

Ive never used Peter Whites wheels but I hear good things. He uses Wheelsmith. He also has a write up on why DTs are bad. Something about the bent end being too long and not providing a good fit on MOST flanges.

I have only done one wheel build and it was with DT competition. I forgot the gauge. They have been fine for me.

Are the alpines the triple butted ones?

I think for my next build i will be using Wheelsmiths for 2 reasons:

1. The Peter White article
2. I can get them cheaper than DT

I'd look around for a prebuilt wheelset, using new Shimano 130mm road hubs. Tiagra hubs will work great with any good rim (Mavic, Sun, Velocity). You want 36 spokes. Street price for a wheelset like this around $150 or less. It's impossible to build a set of wheels this cheaply.
