Greeting friends. MB nubie here. Thinking I would like to give this a try. Currently enjoy recreational road riding for exercise and decompression :) Looking to get a bike to see if I will enjoy the sport. I have the opportunity to pick up a 1995 Cannondale M800 for $300. Thoughts? My initial thougths were to look to spend a little more and get a use newer bike with front suspension like a Trek 4500 or a GF Piranah. Thanks for your insight.
That seems to bee a little over priced unless its completely mint or restored. 4500 is not a bad fun bike

I bought that bike new in the early 90's and rode it for years, great bike. Higher bottom bracket made clearing rocks & logs much easier. However, I sold mine for $250 with a suspension fork, $300 stock is high, it was around $650 new. There was also a recall on the rigid fork so I'd contact Cannondale to see if it's one of the recalled bikes before getting it. Good luck.
Thats a "beast of the east" frame. As already stated.. a higher bottom bracket than their other frames. I had a '91.. I loved it. The beast is somewhat sought after by some.. but I would check for cracks.

Thanks to all for the tips.
So I should maybe get a serial number from the bike (where would I look?) and call CD and see what they say? Additionally I was under the impression that these went for $1,200 new in '95. The '96 model was like $600?
Lastly, how much difference will there be in having a fixed front fork?

SN is stamped under the bottom bracket if I remember correctly. Yes mcoine is right, check for frame cracks, mine did crack for the guy that bought it, think his teenage son was trashing it about.

I had one I bought in new 89 rode it for ten years before the frame finally gave out. Loved that bike.
That price sounds a tad high for a used one imo.
