Road Bike Racing - UCI points system

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Could someone explain to me the UCI points system?
Valverde already has almost 400 points this season.
Heck, winning a grand tour, or the world championships only gives 500.
How did he get all of those?
His win at Mercia should have given him... 100?

In theory, a rider who's only result was a podium in the Tour would have less points than Valverde does right now.
For discussion... what do you all think of the UCI points system?
Valenciana
Stage 1 7th place - 9pts
Stage 2 1st place - 25pts
Stage 2 Mountains - 4pts
Stage 3 1st place - 25pts
Stage 4 1st GC - 5pts
Stage 4 4th place - 14pts
Stage 4 Mountains - 1pt
Stage 5 1st GC - 5pts
Stage 5 3rd place - 16pts
Final GC - 160
Valenciana Total - 266pts
Murcia
Stage 1 6th place - 10pts
Stage 2 10th place - 6pts
Stage 3 7th place - 9pts
Stage 3 Mountains - 2pts
Stage 3 Sprints - 3pts
Stage 4 2nd place - 20pts
Stage 4 Mountains - 8pts
Stage 5 1st GC - 5pts
Overall GC - 160pts
Murcia Total - 223pts
Total: 489
it looks as though those two races (which cyclingnews.com lists as 2.3) were scored as 2.1
it also looks like i found 9 points someplace, perhaps my math is a little off.
Now he will keep those points on his total accumulated UCI points until those events are held next year. If he competes next year in those events, whatever points he won this year will be dropped and replaced with whatever points he wins next year. If he does not compete in those events next year, the points he earned this year will be dropped and will not be replaced.

thanks for the info :D
I got Valencia confused with Mercia, and didn't remember him winning any stages. Oops
