Record barend shifters are £90, far too much for me. Do they do a cheaper one (9 speed)? Or am I stuck with Dura Ace ones set to friction (I'm assuming the indexing wouldn't work)?

I seem to remember hearing that 9-speed campy and shimano spacing are close enough, so if you've got a 9-speed campy cassette, the DA indexing might work.

Somebody more knowledgeable should correct me on that front. Because that said, if you're gonna go friction, you may as well look for an older high-quality friction-only barcon, like on eBay or in the back room at your LBS.

Or, if you want to get really geeky about it: find some cheaper indexed barcon. Figure out the cog spacing of the cassette it was meant for, and the amount of cable travel per click of the shifter. Take the shifter apart and find the plate that has the detents in it. Find an engineer (if you're not one already), and figure out how you would design a new plate that has changes the cable travel to match the spacing of the cassette you're using. Then get a machine shop to make the plate.

I have no idea how much that would cost. It would be a tiny piece of metal though, and I can't imagine it would take the shop very much time at all.. I started a similar discussion on rec.bicycles.tech, though it was about internally-geared hubs.. Maybe you can get more tips there..

cheers,
Y.
