I'm a 45-49 AGer who started this addictive tri stuff last season. Never really biked since my early 20's and hadn't done any swimming except to drown proof. I've done several sprints in the last 18 months.
Did the SC Half as my first half IM distance race Sunday. Absolutely gorgeous course set at Lake Greenwood. The swim was a deep water start a bit after sunrise. Beautiful day with the temps about 60 at the start. Wetsuit legal so off we go. Smack, kick, hit in the head. Fun stuff! Finished the 1.2 in 39 minutes. Couple of minutes in transition and off on the P2C.
Not a flat spot on the course but no big hills. Road was a bit rough. Was aiming for about 18ish mph. Looked at the average speed on the computer at about mile 30. 19.6, hmm better dial that back or I'll have no legs at all. Finished the 56 in 2:55.
Now it is about 86 degrees and sunny. Put on the running shoes and hit the road. Eek, cramps. Walked them out but they would reoccur throughout the half mary. The course is out and back, out and back. I tried to think of it as 4 separate 5ks since the 13.1 was too intimidating. It was a long hot run but it did eventually end. In the end I broke 6 hours by about 30 seconds. Just about 11 minute miles.
This is a great race that is very well run. I have to say that I enjoyed this distance more than the sprints. Now, to figure out where I can take some more time off (can you say THE RUN?)
