Fifty Plus (50+) - Cycling PANTS not tights for cold weather?

Anyone recommend some decent cycling pants in lieu of the ricky-racer BS tights for cooler weather? I am okay with the bright colored jerseys and the spandex in summer but would prefer something a lot more functional (ie - pockets, street-clothing-look) for cooler/colder weather when I am running errands. At least in warm weather, I slip on my cargo shorts over the spandex and can shop or bank more or less as a normal customer. But, tights in winter? The SIDI shoes are bad enough that I will look for something a bit more street-like as well.

But, I still have yet to find a pair of long pants that look like they would work over the spandex shorts with a chamois.

Suggestions? BTW, spare the smart-a** remarks, I don't need them.

best regards,

dave

Something like this will work http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___11220 Campmor Trekmor 2/1 Convertible Pants 30" Inseam (For Men) . Very light weight, made of nylon so you have the built in windbreaker, fast drying and will not break the bank. I have 2 pair that I have used for years backpacking, hiking, walking and yes Biking as well. With elastic built into the waist you can easily slide them over spandex shorts or tights. YMMV

landsend has some goretex slip on pants that should work well. easy to put on over jeans. they are warm, so you won't wear them much above 30F

Endura (http://www.endurasport.com) makes several models of cycling pants that are designed for cycling but have a low-key look

I have a pair of these that have lasted for many, many years.

These are *great* to ride in if you don't want skin tight tights.

On really cold mornings, I'll even wear padded shorts + tights + Tokyo Tights. I also have REI's house brand version of these; pretty much the same thing.

There are lots of options....any sporting good store will have running pants, jogging pants, workout pants, rock-climbing pants....

We have similar taste in bike clothes. :) REI comes to mind.... they have pants and shorts of the type you describe in addition to ricky-racer tights. That's where I bought my Novara (REI's in-house brand) of knee-length shorts -- not tight but not loose, just how I like 'em.

REI is having it's Fall Sale Oct 3-13. 20% off sale on highest priced item. Many items also marked down as well. Got the catalog yesterday. disclaimer I do not work for REI just spend way too much time and money in the local store. With Atlanta's shortage of gas it is a good thing it's too far for me to ride to at this time I'd spend even more time and money there.
