My 2nd-hand road bike came with some no-name carbon bodied SPD pedals (originally off a mountainbike afaik!) which have always given me problems. After my shoes had popped out one time too many I decided I wanted something with a bit more of a platform and with a nice positive click in and out. So I got myself a pair of Shimano, Ultegra PD-R600 pedals.

Fitting was a bit of a pain - but mostly because the old pedals were almost frozen onto the cranks. Some WD40 and some jumping up and down on my spanner ( ;-) ) eventually got them loose though and I've made sure the threads on the new pedals are greased to avoid the same problem again in the future.

The improvement was immediate - I've only tried them out on the trainer so far, but they feel waay more secure. Now I'll be able to change gears on an uphill climb without worrying about clipping out by mistake.
