Now that darkness is approaching, I'm _finally_ getting around to making some LED lights to go with my generator hub. In reading through the piles of materials (inkl. here (http://www.pilom.com/BicycleElectronics/BicycleElectronics.htm), for example), many/most/all of the LEDs that were specified were on the order of the ~70lumens @ 700mA variety.

But then digging through Cree's website, for example, I found what appeared to be much brighter LEDs, such as the MC-E (http://www.cree.com/products/xlamp_mce.asp) line, which are rated to 370 lumens at the same 700mA and 3.4V (with the same claimed thermal loss).

So, my question is, has LED technology taken a huge leap, or is there some reason that these LEDs aren't commonly used? Price? Heat? Durability?

What am I missing?

Typically LEDs are putting out around 100lm at 350mA now. That must be very old data.

If you're building something like circuit 10 from Pilom.com the LEDs will run at 250 or 500mA depending on what mode you select. Martin actually avoids lumen rating (http://www.pilom.com/BicycleElectronics/DynamoCircuits.htm) because it gets out of date so quickly.
This gives around 90/160lm per led (using the cree R2s). MC-E will be similar efficiency for the high bins but its 4 leds, should be 500-600lm.
3 or 4 decent leds is a really good amount of light at 500mA. I'm building one with 5 R2s but will run on half power most of the time.

The new SSC P7 C-BIN with 900 Lumen output at 2.8 amps. Best to just purchase a new P7 flashlight from Dealextreme.com. Make sure to get one with at least 5 modes. Running on high in traffic may get you in trouble and you have longer run times in lower power modes.

If your going DIY Cree has a new LED which produces 700 Lumen at 700mA. This is also a good candidate for a dynamo powered headlight. I'm sure Cree will have optics for it soon.
