Hey all, I've been lurking and kind-of-posting for a while now.

I'm a newbie to the sport, and need to get outfitted with all the stuff in order to start, namely...a bike.

I've had my eye on the '09 CAAD9. Is this more of a racing frame, or will I be happy with it for centuries and doubles? I'm eventually looking at getting into road racing (not really crits, but the longer races).

If the '09 isn't suitable, anyone have better suggestions? My budget is $1300 +/-$200. I'm 6'4, 185 (lean), so if there's a bike with geometry that'd be better for someone bigger, let me know, or just point me to the clyde forum.

Any input is welcome!

for centuries & doubles, it would probably do well. i've ridden doubles on "race" bikes, and lived to tell about it.. it all depends on how good/bad you want to feel at the end.

although past the 400km (249mi) mark you probaby want something with more comfort, clearance, and durability. at least for me, the large saddle-bar drop on my race bike makes 400k+ rides a bit painful.

You won't be able to run fenders, which can be irritating but is certainly no deal breaker.

If the roads are smooth, 25c's are comfortable enough tires and you'll be able to fit them. As long as you get a good fit (ie buy it from a shop that has a good fit guy), I think you'll be ok. There are better long distance specific bikes but if you're not sure whether you want to do brevets or races that's not a bad bike to start with.
