i have trashed my rear wheel and need to replace it but dont want to buy a whole new cog set.

i have shimano 7speed megarange and would like to know if it would just fit onto another shimano hub setup or would i need a specific hub setup for the megarange cogs.

i dont want to spend too much money maybe £50 or so but i dont do anything serious with it.

thanks

Take your trashed wheel to your LBS when you buy the new wheel, and ask them to transfer your cog set onto it.

If it is only the rim that is bad you would only need a new rim and spokes and someone who knows how to build a wheel. I bent a rim back in 1997 and had the bike shop build me a new one using a mid priced rim and my old hub and cogs for about $100.

If he's running 7 spd Megarange it'll be cheaper just to buy a new wheel from the LBS rather than have one built Freewheel style wheels are a dime a dozen.

Those mega range cog clusters come in two flavors. Spin-on freewheel and cassette. Each takes it's own special tool to remove but, of course, the same special tool doesn't work for both.

The cheapest solution is to buy a whole new rear wheel with the appropriate hub and switch over the cog cluster. Having a shop rebuild your existing hub with a new rim and spokes will cost a little more but may result in a better wheel depending on the skill and attitude of the person who does the building.

Definately check out the cost of having your hub rebuilt.
I have a commuting wheel built from lower-end components, but by a really good wheel-builder. It is very strong and reliable. Some builders dont like working with "cheap" components, but there is nothing wrong with them.
