Road Cycling - Just discovered "Klimb software" - wow!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am training for a 60 mile (100km) tour taking place on Apr/3. Since the stated climb on this tour is ~2100, I wanted to make sure I am in shape so I could enjoy the ride. I doing some 40 mile loops in my area and was told by my riding buddy that all we did was 300-400 ft climb. It didn't make sense to me.... I tarted to poke around some Topo maps, and stumbled upon Klimb.org..

I clicked in my training loop route, and guess what? I'm ready!! It is 2500ft.. LOL..

I am double happy: 1) I am ready, and 2) Now I can use this SW to plan all my rides!!!!!

This looks promising, although it may be time-consuming if you don't readily have longitude and latitude coordinates and elevations for nodes or intersections you want to add in order to create the routes you actually ride (which would seem to be its major benefit). IOW, it's only as good as the data you have to input.

Or am I misreading how to use this?

Anyone have a free link to get precise coordinates and/or estimated elevations for a given intersection/address?

I'd love to map in all my regular routes to check/keep track of elevations climbed and see an elevation profile by route, but I can't find anywhere that gives me coordinates or elevations by precise address or intersection.

As the author of KLIMB I'm quite familiar with this problem. In fact I just went through and adjusted all of KLIMB's node coordinates to make them precise enough for GPS navigation--almost 2,000 of them altogether.

The best solution I've found is Terraserver at http://www.terraserver-usa.com/address.aspx. You can search by address and the read the latitude/longitude off the URL.

But you can't search by intersection which Yahoo Maps, Mapquest and others allow, and is what KLIMB needs. For KLIMB, therefore, I used a combination of Yahoo Maps to locate an intersection then I used that information to locate that information on Terraserver. Actually, I didn't use Terraserver directly but used either Acme Mapper (http://mapper.acme.com) and ExpertGPS both of which are based on terraserver. One nice twist is that often the topo map is out of date but then you can look at the aerial photograph which is newer.
