Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - September is done, how have you done in meeting your goals?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Aha! I beat Natbla to start the thread!
Well, folks. how have you done in September?
I dropped 8 pounds in September. I also exceeded my mileage and climbing goals. We'll see how October goes. I'd like to keep the weight loss up for a while yet. Still have 10 or 15 pounds to go.

Weight is down, and smack on track (Lost an average of 3 pounds/week all month) to meet my "Christmas present" goal. Riding, I rode over 600 miles during the month, so that was good.
Overall, great month. I'm looking forward to October, and being ever closer to having a "2" in front of my weight...

September I got 47 miles in. A measly 47 miles!
Short version why:
Bike stolen in the beginning of September
Then my neighborhood flooded and my basement took on 7ft of water during that time. Now 2 weeks later I have at least power back in the house, but no gas for hot water or cooking. The basement is being completely gutted right now. Used to be a nice finished basement with wooden paneling.
No time for biking.

My weight has been up and down, but hasn't exceeded where i started. Still getting used to being hungry more often.
I got 64 miles in on the bike in less than 3 weeks, which isn't too bad for just getting started.
We'll find out at the weightwatchers meeting tomorrow how I did for the month.
I met my goals. I put 1000 miles on the bike in the 3 months I've owned it (probably 450 of them in September) and I'm down under 160lbs (157 to be exact). Maybe by the end of November I'll be under 150. :D
I've done a decent job of maintaining my weight through September after dropping some weight in late August. Now I'm setting myself a goal to lose another 5 lbs. in October, which would bring my weight below 225 lbs, and within very close reach of putting my BMI under 30 (the definition of obesity). Looking forward to the challenge!

Was that flooding from IKE?
Had the flooding, no hot water problem when staying in Beech Grove with my brother back in June.
Yuck.

September was my first month in the saddle having not ridden a bike for about 20 years.
Completed approx 400 miles and now commute 14 mile round trip 4 days a week.
Slightly disappointed by no weight loss despite reducing intake and also I don't seem to
have improved greatly on my fitness level. But I'm enjoying it o I'll keep going and see what happens

Yeah.. I think the rain came from the left overs of Ike. It rained for two days straight. And then the water came.

Decent month with 504 miles. Gina did well with 406!:thumb:
Terrible month for me personally. Way down on riding...fewer miles on fewer days.

I haven't ridden in probably two months.. (gods I hate that bike) but I've just recently restarted lifting, so I guess that's some progress...
completed my first metric century 64.2 miles (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/207653). This more than doubled my previous longest ride of 31mi. Very slow though - 6hrs including a lunch break, bike shop browsing, and many stretch breaks. Knees feel better and legs/back are loosening up.
Will be weekend rides from now on since it kicked my butt (literally) and I had to ride back to work that night.

September went pretty poorly
523.75 miles for the month.
Weight about the same if not higher.
I feel like I'm towing a boat anchor when i'm riding lately.
Broken some spokes on my backup wheel and kinked the rim so it won't go round. Spokes tore up the rear rim on my supposed good set of wheels after about two thousand miles. Hopefully when I get my new set of hand built wheels I'll get some confidence back and be able to rack on some miles. Probably take a few rides to get comfortable they aren't going to fail even though it is a really highly recommended local wheel builder from a bunch of fellow recumbent randonneurs.
Went down and watched the first night of the texas time trials. I'd probably have ridden the 6 or 12 hour if I hadn't had wheel trouble but i was nice to go down and see some folks I know who actually have some speed ride. Unfortunately reinforced that I really can't ride with these folks I'm just too slow and I don't want to be an anchor regardless of if they mind or not. :(

About 600 miles. Not as many as I wanted, because I'm working up to a couple century rides in October. But my commuting speed is waaaay up. When I don't have time for the miles, I substitute by riding hard. Not sure if it's better or worse for the centuries. The hills are looking smaller, though.

September= 19 rides for 382 miles for me. Just crossed 1000 mi. since starting biking in late June. My weight is down from north of 250 to about 235 and I am getting much stronger as a rider. What fun!

Another ugly month for me, was hoping for about 150 miles a week by now, managed 106 for the month, it's getting colder, it dark earlier, and it's still raining way too much...... I've written off the year now, bah humbug.....

350ish miles, weight is bouncing between 203 and 204. Those last 5 pounds have been very stubborn.
120 miles until I reach my yearly goal.

WOW _ AWESOME!!!!!! HIP HIP HOORAY>>It must feel so incredible to have that weight loss. I know you are not at your goal - but It must be unbeliveable each day and have that weight gone. FREEDOM!! I do feel that - lost less than you about 38 pounds...b ut feel liek I fit into normal clothes- in fact I look in the mirror - and really feel like I look good and attractive. Ok so we do this for a ton of reasons...but vanity is definitely up there for me. It is a HUGE relief not to be so heavy any more. So I think you are terriffic!! And I hope you are very very proud of what you are accomplishing. (Come on over to out Biggest loser Thread and inspire the team - like a guest speaker... )

I should answer this too.
Weight remained about the same. I rode on a number of organized rides. I took lots of photos. For the second time I tried a clipless system and ditched it because I can't get my crooked right foot into the pedal. I wrapped up Team Clydesdale, so that's over. I've replaced my old uncomfortable saddle with one that might or might not work after a change or two. I'm anxious to tour again - nothing new there.
My mileage goal for the year was to match last year's figure of 3005. I'm at 1900 and change now. I need to turn on the jets, so to speak, over the next three months. The organized ride season ends this month, and camping season is also coming to an end soon. I'd better get busy.
I'm beginning to plan next year. The big question is if I ride across the US - do I have the courage to do it? It means leaving the Philadelphia area, where I've lived all my life. It means losing my job, since I doubt my employer will give me three months off. I also have to consider if I should come back. I've never been west of Cleveland, Ohio, north of Buffalo, NY, or south of Washington, DC. There's little personally or professionally to hold me to Philadelphia. But I have a few months to consider these matters.

Septmeber was a little off due to being sidelined by my gallbladder. My goal for the month was to ride 250 miles including my first metric century and run 30. I only got in 126 miles on the bike, but I did get in a half century as a warmup ride before my galbladder went haywire. I only ran 6 miles. I am recovering well however, and today I will attempt my first bike ride since the surgery last week. I lost 7 pounds for the month of September. This brings me to 71 pounds lost for the year. :D

I will give it to you. When you start asking questions, you put it all on the table. I have noticed that most of your tours so far have been rail trail tours. You might consider an doing a road tour to warm up to riding across the US. I can't speak for other parts of the country, but in the South, the only way that you are going to tour very much is to get used to riding on the roads, because we don't have any trails to speak of.

1913 miles YTD. Making 2000 is obviously not gonna be a problem (mid-October, probably). If I keep up an average of 50 miles/week, I'll hit 2500 for the year.
I kept up a bike/train commute for the last few months, although that will change now: My wife works in the same town I do now, so there's no sense paying for the train when I can ride in with her.
I met my touring goals - Pittsburgh to DC and a few prep tours before that.
Health is good, but I'm 9again) having trouble with epilepsy medications. BP is good, better than it's ever been. I'm stuck at 197lbs, though. I'd like to trim some more off of that, but it hasn't happened this year.

Hi Race,
I feel confident enough in my road riding skills, aside from excess caution in downhills. Most of my touring has been on roads, or on roads with some trail riding. My two big tours this year were on trails and a towpath because I wanted to avoid hills and see some incredibly scenic areas.
Speaking of the South, an alternate I'm towing with is riding BRAG. My friend Phil has been trying to get me to ride it for a couple of years. In fact, he first brought the subject up back when I first learned to balance. Now that's a hard sell. :)

That's good. I had missed that earlier. Another thought in the South is the Natchez Trace. It runs from just south of Nashville, TN to Natchez, MS. It is a little over 440 miles of two lane scenic road with historical sites along the way. I have a friend who is doing it in a few weeks. http://www.nps.gov/natr/bicyclinghome.htm

Road goals for me are still in "recovery" mode.
I backed off during the hot months and was pursuing another main hobby a lot -- surfing. Now I just got sick so I'm going to have to suck it up for a bit I guess.
That'll make getting back on the bike that much sweeter. At least it has done in the past.
Just started on the road bike bit on Sept 10. that being said between hurricanes and the learning curve I was able to log 375 mile. I am hoping to hit 125 per week and increase my avarage speeds before attempting longer distances . Working on getting better about stepping on the scale , will post benchmark next month .

September was a pretty good month for me:
1) I beat 2007's mileage -- I rode over 1326 km. My goal for 2008 is 2000 km, and in spite of the weather I believe I will meet my goal.
2) I gained 5 lbs, but I think some of that is muscle. I did overdo the ice cream a bit, so that 5 lbs may be a chunk of butterfat. Oops!
On the plus side, I did lose that 5 lbs this week by concentrating on my food choices and not eat higgledy piggledy (literally).
3) My average speed has increased. I can now maintain 16 km per hour on the flats, and that is a huge jump from last year's 10-12 km average.
4) I replaced the brake pads on my bike myself, and it was pretty easy. I'm rather pleased with this new skill (it won't help me take over the world, but it's still quite neat).
So September, not to bad, eh?

My goal was to actually do something. I hadn't rode all year through August. I'm in Michigan so the season is dwindling. Took the Fuji Folder to the new house and rode around the neighborhood once. Got the Schwinn 2-Speed chain adjusted, generator adjusted, and the back baskets removed - cost me $12. Rode it twice. The shop rigged the cyclocomputer sensor on my 1973 Atala so it works - cost me $6.10. Rode it once. I'm going to set the Atala on the 1upUSA trainer that has been sitting around for the last five years. Need to get a helmet for the bikes at the old house.
Need to work on my wind as the Thyroid Cancer that moved into my lungs seemed to take away some of my capacity. I've been fighting the cancer six years now. Fortunately, I've been able to get experimental treatments, first at the Ohio State University James Cancer Center, and now at Karmanos at the Detroit Medical Center. Need to treat the onset Diabetes better. October is perhaps my favorite month. Looking to get some more riding in.

My commute has gone through several odd stages. From commuting on the train with an ocassional bike commute, to a folding bike/train commute, to a commute by car with my wife (who now works in the same town as me). Commuting by car... I get to spend more time with Martha, but there's less riding.
Fortunately, I've been making up for it on the weekends. I need to keep up just over 50 miles/week if I want to make 2500 by New Year's eve.
First the good:
I made my annual goal for riding 2000 miles for the year. I finished the month just over that at 2054 miles.
Now the not so good:
1) I only road 102.11 miles instead of the 250 miles targeted.
2) I gained weight for the second month in a row (see number 1 for reason). I ended the month at 212.4 up from my year low of 205.4 at the end of July. Doesn't look like I'll hit my goal of losing 40 pounds this year. Still I could get under 200 by the end of the year. That would be a real victory for me.
3) I' still 2 100 mile centuries away from meeting my goal of 3 for the year. I am scheduled to ride a 200K ride on October 18th the Capon Bridge 200K run by the DC Randonuaers (misspelled). This will be challenging but i think I can do it. But it will be tough.
