Mountain Biking - Too tempting

Ebay is a dangerous place to be.

2003 intense tracer frame (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3665506062&category=22679#ebayphotohosting)

Reason tells me I should wait another year before going full-suspension bike, but I close the window and I still see that FSR-style silver beauty. According to the dimensions I looked up, that frame should fit fine.

Anybody got any thoughts on it? Especially if anybody owns one.

A2, you're definitely not helping me resist the temptation. I really should wait another year until I finish my BS, but both frames seem like pretty good deals. The one I posted also includes a Chris King headset and a Thompson Elite seatpost, so the value difference isn't as great as it seems.

The Haro frame actually is slightly different. It's got a big gusset on the head tube, so it's stronger. I also think the weight the seller listed is about a pound heavier than what I was quoted on a Tracer. Do you know anyplace where I can find more info on that frame. I did a google search and couldn't find anything.

O.k., The Tracer has a Chris King headset and a Thomson post, figure new that would cost you $175. "Buy it now" for that frame is $1,100. The Haro is made by Intense with some very slight mods, then painted and had the Haro decals applied. "Buy it now" what $599? Add say, $250 for the headset, post, saddle and front derailleur, you're still ahead with the HARO. Plus I would think you would WANT the additional gusset.

I've always wanted an Intense, and I now own an Uzzi SL, so I've always read, test rode and investigated everything I could about Intense. Great company, great bikes, great everything (including customer service).

I also worked at a bike shop that was a Haro dealer. I almost bought that same frame because it IS an Intense! My employee cost was still over $1,000.00 This one for $600 is a great deal! No if ands or buts. It's a couple of years old, (probably a 2001 or 2002 frame) but it's brand new!

The ONLY reason I didn't get it was I'm a big guy, and wanted a burlier bike, so I got the Uzzi SL. I almost bought an SLX, but for the trails I ride, it would've been overkill. The Tracer/Haro is considered a lightweight XC/Trail bike that handles everything well. It's just more lightweight than my fat butt should ride!

I still recommend the Haro!

Oh yeah, screw waiting! I'm 35, married and have a kid. You'll never be in a better postion than now to afford this bike. I thought when I graduated, that I'd be rolling in the dough, NOPE! Just a lot more responsibility and bigger bills to pay off. Get it now while you're young enough and irresponsible enough to enjoy the heck out of it! You're only young once, and you sleep enough when you're dead!

I totally agree it's a great deal or it wouldn't be such a hard decision. I thought about it a little and put the auction I posted out of my mind, but I don't really want to buy a kick-ass frame and build it with mid-range components when I'm positive I will have the money in another year to build exactly what I want. The final hold-up is I've never test-ridden one, although I've never heard anything bad about the Tracer.

On the other hand, I guess I could buy half the stuff I want, use the low-end stuff that's on my hardtail for now and let that frame sit in the closet for a year... I hate financial decisions.

Well, I've got 5 days left, assuming no one else does buy-it-now. And yeah, the gusset is a plus, I was just pointing out differences. Amazing how simple things like ebay make life complicated. :rolleyes:

That's awesome to hear A2. Sometimes I feel guilty about not having anything to show for countless thousands of dollars I've spent on various toys over the year. But I might as well have fun while I can.
