I have a bad touring habit and especially love staying in the West and far North since there are fewer cars and more public land. I'm planning on starting in California in late May and heading east into the Rockies and then taking a left turn to end up in Alaska, the Yukon, or the Northwest Territories. I tour about 1/3 on dirt with a modified mountain bike. Have done about 100,000 miles - love to do major rides every summer. I usually do some serious wilderness hiking as part of the trip and have shipped a raft ahead and have hopped on a few rivers in the past - - I just strap my bike to a big inner tube - looks funny, but it works. Thinking about the Dempster, maybe the Canol, or the Denali Highway linking the Parks and Richardson Hwys. Am 47 - too old and grizzled for bears - especially if there's a younger person around. I just tell the bears that younger folks taste better. Toured the far North about 6 times already. If you work your way north it's not that big of a deal - even if you are 100 miles from any civilization - - however, if you start out in the Arctic, it's a big shock. Will consider the national parks in US and Canada - ie Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Glacier, Banff, Jasper - but they tend to be touristy and have cycling and camping restrictions. Oftentimes, there is incredible remote country nearby without the hassles. Let me know if you are interested.
