Bicycle Mechanics - Is my thread worn on my pedal?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Due to me changing my front chainset and giving my bike a complete once over (and i must say eveyrythings gone really well, re greased the cables, reset gears, brakes etc)but i cant get my damn right pedal on, it just keeps spinning and spinning and not actually catching on the thread, it took forever to get the other pedal on but its on now, but i think the thread might be worn, if thats so what on earth can i do, how can i re thread it? if i need to.

Try turning the other way. Seriously.

Mazza,
I was also going to ask (sorry if you knew this already) if you were turning the pedal in the right direction, since right and left pedals have right and left handed threading, respectively. Since it is the right pedal that is giving trouble, this is not likely to be an issue. For more on pedal installation etc. check out the Barnetts manuals at the top of the "Bike Mechanics" section
Look carefully at the threads on the pedal, and inside the crank and check that they run true right up to the start point. Sometimes the very last part of a thread gets damaged, preventing assembly. If this is the case it can be repaired without any long term problems by careful re-sculpting with a needle file (only the very tip of the thread, mind). If the thread on the crank is damaged at the start, you could try to see if the pedal will thread through from the wrong side. If it reaches far enough, it will dislodge any burr at the start and should fix the problem. Otherwise you need to use the correct tap to clean out the thread - a good bike shop will have this equipment.
Check that there is no alloy metal from the crank embedded in the pedal thread, which would indicate a more serious problem. I had this happen once when removing a pedal, which had not been greased before installation, the pedal was very hard to remove and had seized. Removing it stripped the crank - fortunately the shop covered this under warranty.
Good luck,
Ed

Drive/Right Side pedal: Clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen (conventional threading)
Non-Drive/Left Side peadl: Counter-clockwise to tighten, clockwise to loosen (reverse threaded)
Pedals should be marked with an L and/or an R

Thats the problem by the sound of it. Use this easy method of remembering that I use.
Turn the pedal bolt to the front of the bike to put them on, and to the back of the bike to take them off. Its easy to remeber the term "back off"
