I realized I have a strange grip on my drop bars sometimes. When on the hoods, the grip usually goes the whole way into the "v" between thumb and index finger. However, sometimes I rest my hand on the base of my index finger. THis pushes my index finger back and up, but it's somehow comfortable. I supose it's because there's a bone right there. I'll also occasionally ride with the hood between any other fingers. Anyone else have a wierd grip on the bars?

Not strange at all. I do all that as well. One of my favorite hand positions is to have my hands right next to each other on either side of the stem and my index fingers hooked together. Sometimes I hook my thumbs on the hoods and let my fingers drop to the "drops". All kinds of hand positions, nothing right or wrong about any of them.
