Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bent track frame- fixable?

I already posted this in the framebuilders forum, but I thought people over here might have more real-life experience with beaten up steel, so I'd like your opinions on this too. I'm considering buying a steel frame that is said to have been "rear ended by a car". I was wondering if you think it would be possible to fix this frame- or if it is even safe to ride. Keep in mind I'm light at about 125 lbs.

Worth buying and trying to repair, or would it be better as a wall ornament?

You caught me. I think I'm going to bid on it just so I can have an NJS frame above my fireplace.

It's steel so yeah it's plenty fixable, you just have to justify if the time/money to fix it is justifiable.

i wouldn't trust that frame.

Brazed steel=all tubes replaceable. how much time/money do you want to spend?

call up a frame builder and see how much the repair will cost. then add it to what you are willing to spend for a beat to **** frame

skip it, theres plenty of non bent track frames out there.

I would drop about $150 on that frame if I had the ability to replace the tubes myself. To have a reputable builder do it for you would, in my opinion, cost more than the frame would be worth in non-damaged condition.

I would so buy that Samson if I was in SF. As a real beater trick/street bike.

Too tweaked. Even if you get the rear triangle replaced, it will not be the same as the first build. The brazing process will have been "interrupted". Maybe a framebuilder would do it as a fun project for himself/herself, but other than that............."Walk away" (Mad Max ref.)

I don't think we've met the seller yet. I'd guess those pics were a result of correspondence between the seller and the OP.

these are the pictures from the seller's photobucket page. There is a link to them on the item's ebay page. I'm a potential buyer, not the seller.

I agree with you, though that the seller has not satisfactorily described the frame in his auction. There is a definite crack between the chainstay and the track end, but he only describes the frame as "bent", which isn't nearly as bad in my mind. At any rate, it sucks that he got rear ended by a car.

He can't bang out a crack in the metal any more than you can punctuate your sentences in a manner that doesn't make you look like an illiterate mental patient.

Nope, the rear triangle is toast. If you "bend" it back and "fix" the crack, you didn't fix it correctly and have no concept of the correct ways to fix/restore frames.

That framest requires a new rear triangle, and the chainstays must be carefully ground out of the BB. The seatstays can be repaired by using shorter sections with an internal sleeve if the repairer wanted to maintain the factory seatcluster union (internally lugged, would add a few grams) and would make that portion of the repair easier.

You would put the frame in your building jig, and determine factory BB height. Cut the chainstays short, and start grinding, taking the massive heat required to pull the chainstays clear would be foolish. The Repairer would then use heat propogation control paste around the seat-tube and down tube unions, and would use silver solder (if you got the gaps right) and redo the chainstays.

The above method would be the SAFE and correct way to do it.

Sometimes you have to let it go, that frame is a candidate for a framebuilder. Buying that frame is "Penny wise-pound foolish". WALK AWAY.

givethisbiketomeIwillfixit-----it is bent, not cut----the welds are on the side of the slot-- not the center-- give me a weekend of pounding and peening and drinking and smoking and.......
and I'get that sucker close --- matter o fact- i'd peen the whole frame and clear coat it!
