I am very close to buying this old trek 520. It's in real good shape. The guy said at matthews nothing really needs to be done to the bike now. I road it and man i had control. It's a 19" frame and fits well for me. The only thing i dislike is its 17 years old. Any thoughts to upgrading...David

348.00 i already put 120.00 down but i can get it back. The bike i am looking at friday has a straight bar. which is a GT legato 1.0. but its aluminum and very light. Me and bumps don't get along lol...
The only thing i dislike is its 17 years old.
Why buy an older bike, if you don't like its age?

Bumps, eh? No like? Then you might want to look into a new saddle - if it doesn't have a newer one that can rock a bit to absorb road-shocks and such. Ones I've found capable of doing this are the Terry saddles which are gender-specific (men, women) - designed with doctor's and physiologists - and have a opening down the mid-line that helps them absorb shock and flex with your pedal-stroke. I have both the Fly-Ti and the Tri-Fly. They are both excellent.

Which bike to buy should be determined by what you want to do with it.
The 520 is a legendary touring bike that many use as a commuter, too. It is a great all around bike. Don't let its age deter you. It is a desirable bike and should hold its value quite well. $340 is around market value for a good 520.
BTW, 1991 520's are purple with white on pink lettering. Very Miami Vice.
Either you are comfortable riding an older bike, or you are not. That is a very personal decision. If you are not comfortable riding an older bike, then I would get your money back and get a newer bike.
Note: for Treks, I currently own an '05 1000, '94 800, '94 950, '92 950, and an '83 520. I also have a '73 and a '75 Peugeot. So obviously, I am not concerned about riding an older bike. All of my older bikes are steel, FWIW.
Rust is the main threat to a steel bike. So I would pull the seat post, and with a flashlight, look down inside the seat tube. This is a common area for rust (and is really easy to check). If the bike has rust, either the price should be much, much lower, or you should pass. And even if the price is much lower, unless you are comfortable doing some serious wrenching on a bike, you should pass. A "reasonable" amount of rust can be dealt with, but requires you strip the bike down to the frame, treat it, and reassemble it. Such work done by a bike shop would be cost prohibitive.
Assuming the bike is in ready to ride condition, the price is reasonable. You should be able to ride the bike for many, many years, and then sell it for close to what you paid for it. The Trek 520 is a classic that many riders appreciate (and seek).
As far as upgrades, assuming your 91 is all stock, I would just do the usual maintenance: bearings, cables, brake pads and ride it. My '83 has 27 inch rims and DT shifters. I am looking to swap a spare set of 700cms wheels I have on hand, and perhaps round up some barcons for it. I would basically upgrade my 1983 to be very similar to your 1991.
I like the Deore DX components that came with the 1991 520. All in all, that year is a sweet bike!!

k so what your saying is aligning up with what the tech said. With that said i am most likely going to purchase the bike. If anything trade the one i am getting to get this bike. Still owe 256.00. I am anxious for this bike.

actually i do not mind older things. In fact i married an older woman...lol:thumb:
sometimes older is better. In this case i believe the trek 520 is more superior then the newer bikes. Not all them but for me the money i am spending it is. If i was to change the shifter and brakes to more standardize like whats on most road bikes today. What would you recommend and does nashbar have something to look at?

well its done i bought a trek 100 more my size and its only a 2004. i love the bike rides well. I guess that makes me a trekie...
