About a year ago I foolishly took the chain off my chainwhip, pushed the pin all the way out, and cannot get it back on. The chain on the chainwhip is 3/32 kmc and I have an old 6-7-8 speed kmc chain to put on it.

I also now have a 9 speed Shimano connecting pin floating around that I would like to use to attach the chain. Shimano says this won't work, but they have lied to me about compatibility in the past. Should I believe them?

9 speed chains are narrower than 6-7-8 speed, so the connecting pins probably won't be long enough.
Why would you need the connecting pin? Just use some of the KMC chain you have.

Yeah, just connect it with one of the pins in the chain you have. Don't have to waste your replacement pin that way. :)

The part that is still connected to the handle is just the two outside plates and I cannot for the life of me get a regular pin started through them to connect a chain.

Maybe someone has a trick for this?

Drive the pin out of the those 2 plates and start over. You won't miss that link

Or file the edge of the pin a bit to get it started - it's only going on a chain whip after all. You can even attach it with wire if needed.
