Man henry and ramon, among others underweigh me by like 30-35 lb. Maybe I need so start training with a 35 lb lead weight in a backpack. That way when I take it off for the group rides, I can feel like I'm that light ;)

As far as your training regimen, hang some panniers off the rack on your tandem, and fill 'em with sand. You want the extra weight on the bike, not on your back. :P

In 6 months I've gained 6 pounds, but I think a lot of it is muscle mass. I've been working on core strength as opposed to cardio...I think? I seem to go against gravity a little better. Maybe I'm just grouchier!

No digital scale here but this is what I got from my antique analog one:
Engine: 174.x lb (was 190 at the beginning of the year, 170 after the Death Ride :thumb:).
Bike: 16.x lb (with pedals and cages, no seat bag).
Just got a small digital fish scale: the bike weight 17.77 lb with cages and pedals.

And yet you and Ramon still smoke me on the hills. I think I need to gain weight as muscle mass.
Pete, I'm only short compared to anyone taller than 5'5" :D

Dayum, you're only 170?
As for training with 35lbs of lead weight, yeah, it's the Paula technique!

I'm at 202, down from 298. Planning to hit 185 in January.
It doesn't matter how much any of my bikes weigh until I hit 185.

I weight about 150LBS and my giant is about 21, my Le Tour is about 29, and my MTB is about 30
me = soft at 147 (60 lbs lighter than i was 10 years ago; working my way back down to 140ish)
55 lemond sarthe = 20.6
52 caad4 = 16.8 (before switching components to the lemond)
only time i feel the weight difference is when carrying the bike up a flight of stairs. it's a non-factor while riding, esp. considering how much more joyful riding is with the lemond.

My RS is about 16.5, the Giant is about 19.2, and I'm about 155.

...I think I'm in the 17.5 lb range...
Correction: my bike is actually 17.8.
My weight is 142 on average.

:D Actually the heaviest backpack I've ridden with I think was 25 lbs. ;)

On short, steep climbs I notice the extra weight of the rear triangle on the steel bike. On longer climbs like HW 9 or Mt. Hamilton it's not noticeable. On mixed climbs like Montebello or all of Page Mill it depends on heart rate and how I'm feeling that day. The steel bike is slower to get going but it's like velvet once it is moving.
Hmmm...I wonder if it's a fallcy for me to conclude that I probably don't need to concern myelf in getting my bike to drop, say, 3 pounds since I do enjoy sustained climbs and I don't find myself fretting over going fast on short, steep climbs. Not to mention, dropping 3 pounds on any bike these days seems to require about $3,000 or more (new wheelset, new groupo, and zero-gravity brakes). I need me a bailout package!

Hmm, curiosity got the best of me. Using the "stand on the scale while holding the bike" method, the Surly comes in at 30 pounds even, not even including the water bottles. I think it's gaining weight. :hmm:
More surprising than that is that my fixed gear bike apparently weighs about 22 pounds. I could have sworn it was under 20. Oh well, still not bad for an all-steel bike with steel handlebars, a Brooks saddle, a flask, cheap deep-section wheels, and thick, indestructible Gatorskins.
The Downtube weighs in at 28 pounds, but that's no surprise.

Steel bars and Brooks saddle really did you in.

RS2 w/Tdf38s was sub-15lbs [Borrowed bike for Tam Race, ~18 lbs]
Track bike ~1?lbs
SS 29er ~25lbs
Commuter ~28lbs
Me ~140lbs and rising....I love the off season!
Steel bars and Brooks saddle really did you in.Yep. It's the price one pays for shiny, shiny, shininess and a comfortable arse.
I was so surprised because it feels so light. But it is, compared to the other bike! :P

Having starting cycling I have dropped from 268 to 188. I figure that having dropped probably 5 times the weight of my bike it don't really matter how much it weighs. Thankfully I'm at the point where I can now see my feet while riding and am no longer riding on the rim :) Keep on cycling ...

I am about 190 and my bikes are 19.1 and 21.2 setup the way I ride them except water. I recently weighed all my gear and all the little parts of both bikes (stem, spacers, seat posts, seat clamps, clothing, etc). I was really surprised how I was focused on making the bike lighter and didn't even think about my gear. At the extreme end I can save 2.2lbs just by how I dress.
