Great Idea!!!!!!!!!! But now that the international news media has reported on this id bet that the professional thieves will have it figured out by the time its implemented. They will either shield the signal or detect it before hand and leave those bikes alone. Perhaps this should have been kept hush hush. It would be interesting to see a follow up on how successful it is now that its been "leaked".

Last year the City of Hamilton used a "baited bike" method to arrest some bike thieves at our Central Library downtown. I don't think they used GPS, they just watched and waited, didn't take long to catch 4 or 5 thieves.
They have a similar program with cars (with GPS) that they park at malls and wait for someone to steal. It has really cut down on theft numbers (they have signs in the mall parking lots saying there are baited cars parked there)

I wonder how they were able to track the crooks? A GPS will not work inside the crooks home. I guess they probably just followed the guy to his house and made an arrest.
The whole GPS world is just starting to explode and new uses are showing up everywhere.

My local cops used a radio beacon to setup a bike theft. They were really after the fence (dealer in stolen goods). They figured that a bike theft was the easiest route to him, and recovered a whole stash of stolen goods.

The GPS should at least work up until the thief gets to his house or wherever he is going.
A jamming device may be able to kill the GPS signal, but at least the "part time" bike thieves may not be able to afford this.

But we want the ringleader or kingpin, and not just the street hustler, don't we??

Yeah, but as long as I keep my bike I am happy. Anything that increases the odds of me keeping it is good.
